Dan Blank has been coaching college soccer for over twenty years and served most recently as associate head coach at the University of Georgia. He is the first coach in Southeastern Conference history to lead the conference’s best defense in consecutive years at different universities (Ole Miss 2009, Georgia 2010). I read SOOOO many reviews on this and bought this for my 11 year old son who is obsessed with soccer. I thought he could learn a ton and he told me, "mom, this is soooooo basic. I can't even read anymore because this information is for people who have never played before! It's like a 7 year old could use this information!" I didn't read it....I'm just reporting back what my 11 year old said.

I have the joy of assistant-coaching along side the top HS Boys Varsity Soccer coach in the USA. Our coaching team has frequently referenced Dan Blank's IQ1 and IQ2 as the most comprehensive sources of easily taught, though powerful, how-to-play-soccer concepts. I have watched players adopt Dan's lessons immediately create more opportunities for themselves and their team. We have had the HS boys read his IQ 1 book and the coaches draw ideas from the IQ 1 & 2 books all season long.I recommended Dan's books to all engaged parents, and tested his lessons with select club players ranging from U10-U14 with great results. If you want to get more out of your passing, ball control, movement on the field, and your attacking/defending skills, the Soccer IQ1&2 are fantastic. One bit of advice.... don't try to adopt every lesson at once. Read through the books and then incrementally add to your game 1 or 2 of the ideas each week or two. If that is too fast, add 1 idea every 3+ weeks. Focus on getting the concept to work for you before moving on to another lesson.

Okay, so I started with Posession, then I read High Pressure, and then finally went back and read Soccer iQ Vol. 1. This had a different feel to it, but maybe because I read them out of order. However, that does not take away from the fact that this book was ingeniously written. As a coach, I felt the book spoke more to the player in me than it did the coach, but the more a coach understands about their players and what they should expect, the better off they'll be. Enter Soccer iQ. Sarcastic yet informative, fun and intelligent, this book grabbed me by the eyes and kept my attention the whole way through. If you coach, I suggest picking this book up for a read. It's witty, and you might even get a few chuckles out of it.

This is written in a very casual tone, as if the author is speaking to you at a practice. It has some good points for those coaching older kids, but if you are looking for a book to help coach younger kids, this is not it, as it does not focus on technical training. It doesn't focus on any topic or set of related topics but, instead, covers a wide range of topics, with about a page or page and a half devoted to each topic.

I was looking for a book for my soccer coaches and came upon this one. Best I've ever read. Not just for coaches but players and parents as well.Entertaining, laugh out loud segments, so "spot on" and easy to understand you will envision the exact scenarios before you because you've seen them countless times unfold before your eyes but never took the time to break it all down. Excellent stuff by Dan Blank - you'll read this one and buy the rest. Has good books on Defense, Offense, Goalies, Parents even one on how to survive freshman year in college.

Extremely helpful. A few descriptions/ideas were a little hard to understand but it is still worth it.UPDATE: In one of my games the ref blew the whistle fo a foul right outside the top of the 18 and I grabbed the ball and set it up quickly and shot the ball while the other team was trying to set up a wall. If I had not read this book, then I never would have taken the shot so quickly and scored the first goal of the season for our team.

Alot of useful information to use and instill in your coaching tools. Also, useful coaching tips to instill in your players. One of the best information books on coaching out there. If you are looking for coach experience this is the book. If you are looking for a book on hundreds of drills this is not your book. Read 3 times and will read again. Just ordered volume 2. A third wouldn’t be selling out as all your experience and details are priceless for lower level club coaches. Thanks for all your books!!!!

A gift for an 11 year old girl who is now OBSESSED with Lumberjanes. Smart, funny, fun, diverse graphic novel storytelling for tweens and teans.

lumberjanes are the stuff, homettes. I really like the quirky writing and art. I bought these for my daughter but I like them too.confession time, yes I am a grown man. yes I liked reading the comic intended for pre-college girls.well maybe a little shame, it's still worth it though.

I bought Volume 2 for my sister after she bought me Volume 1 (and read it before she gave it to me, which got her hooked!). I'd already read these issues online, but it's even more beautiful in print! The colors are so rich and vibrant, and it really brings the story to life. As for the stories, it's a perfect blend of magic and mayhem, action and adventure, humor as well as nods to serious topics, all with the awesome hardcore lady types we know and love--so, typical Lumberjanes! I'm really so grateful to have found this series. Even as a 20-something year old, I found it incredibly inspiring--even healing--to read a story where girls were not only placed front and center, but were allowed to be real, natural, dirty (hey, they're at camp!), and diverse--not to mention going on epic magical adventures! Honestly, even as a lifelong feminist who really pays attention to media's portrayal of girls and women, it sometimes takes series like Lumerjanes for it to really hit me how rarely media focuses on girls, their friendships or relationships, or their diversity, and when it does focus on girls, demands them to always look pretty and perfect (according to *their* standards of beauty, of course). More than that, it made me realize how much consuming that type of media affects my own self image and self esteem. Even when you think you're enjoying all the "Strong Female Characters" on TV or movies, the fact that the vast majority are still skinny, white, conventionally attractive, cishet women with perfect hair and makeup all the time, well...it takes a toll. Lumberjanes made me feel more comfortable in my own skin than I had in a long time, and for that reason alone, I hope this series reaches as many girls (and boys!) as possible. Keep it up, Lumberjanes!

This is a fabulous book! Eagle paints and writes beautifully. She is as intelligent and articulate as she is talented as a painter. A rare combination!But is it a “How to Book”?It actually IS A HOW TO BOOK. In the final analysis you do not create good paintings by following recipes. You do not create good paintings by copying someone else’s style or by adapting clever techniques.You create good paintings in what Yeats called “The Rag and Bones Shop of the Heart”. Eagle gives us a glimpse of her very own heart, sensitivity and perception.That’s the source folks! Paint what you love; feel it deeply, and the techniques will come.

Definitely not what I expected. Pretty much zero info on how to get started in pastels. Mostly, just the author showing off her considerable talents while surveying her fascination with pastel usage in portraiture. I wanted a beginners book to help me get started on my main interest which is learning to do landscapes, etc. with pastels. Wrong book for that. Nice pictures of beautiful portraits through the ages and a few, spare notes on materials and history of the medium. Not much else.

I have a deep love of working with pastels. It began in childhood when my grandfather (trained at the academy in Rome in the early 1900s) created pastel paintings during family visits, and sometimes let me use sticks from his huge oak chest of drawers that contained his complete set of Rembrandt colors. It left me with an appreciation for pastel portraiture, in particular (my grandfather's specialty), that only increased as I found the pastel work by Degas, for example, and other artists traditionally considered oil painters. But pastel was not taught at my art schools, nor are there many publications about them. Over the years I did read books on pastel and sometimes followed pastel forums on artists' community sites. But none of these experiences matched memories of how my grandfather worked with them, and the primary focus seemed to be plein air landscape painting.So it has been a joy to find Ellen Eagel's book, and pore over her lucid, thoughtful writings on the medium. In particular, I found her use of various pastel hardnesses refreshing. (It seems these days that many artists develop a rather lopsided worship of the softest sticks they can find.) Also, the way she plays with transparency and opacity (allowing the ground to show through many color areas, using blending as a deliberate effect rather than as the default mode of pigment application) was a revelation for me. This is an artist who has developed her craft to a very high level, and even better, has a generous and candid teaching style that is a pleasure to read. Her book is not a "how-to manual" that describes a single method of creating works in pastels. Rather, it feels more like a studio visit, where she sits and explains the things you're seeing her work with. Just as my grandfather once did.

Ellen Eagle is a brilliant pastelist. I read and watch everything she publishes and desperately want to study with her one day... If you want to understand the medium, this is a terrific book... She even provides her formulation for pumice board priming... It's a wonderful and very helpful book as well as providing background into the material itself.

Gives you insight into how one professional artist goes about the process of creating a magnificent portrait, one that not only displays the subject realistically, but also somehow shows you the soul and mood. Ms Eagle shows you her tools and studio, and techniques she employs in her work, which is very enlightening. I think anyone with an interest in any medium, but especially pastel, would get a lot of knowledge and enjoyment from this book.

A wonderful book that is a pleasure to read. The author's sharing of her creative process and chapters on the step-by-step building of a pastel painting are invaluable. Suggestions about materials, how to evaluate a work in progress and how to correct mistakes are very helpful. The book illustrates vast expressive possibilities and quiet qualities of pastel, a medium that had its golden age more than two centuries ago but now is rather under-appreciated. It also highlights the art of looking at and truly seeing another person, without which portraiture is impossible. Those in search of bulleted supply lists and shortcuts to making fast and easy paintings may be disappointed. But if they slow down and read carefully through this book, they may discover something new to them. Understanding the mental process of painting is more important than just being able to copy something's appearance. I thought it was very interesting to read about her interactions with her models. I read the book first on my Kindle, then got the colour one from the library, so I appreaciated both the technical parts, then seeing her work, which is top notch.

Wonderful book, and a must read.

The book has a lot of potential, needs a lot of updating and editing. Clarity of thought was muddled behind specialized words that obstructed intent? The first essay had great potential but was hammered by a prose-style that eviscerated the reader's desire to finish reading the essay! Ultimately--Sandoval--fell into the scholarly trap of being a scholar who needed to justify her scholarly position by sounding like one, without considering the reader. The book read like a plywood saddle on a bucking horse with hemorrhoids—different but painful-

For me it was an argument for engaging academic knowledge in its most convoluted and critical forms with daily, socio-political and socio-economic existence. Volumes of Rowling, Gladwell, Adams, Lamb, Salvatore, Savage, King, Anthony, and Crichton flash before my eyes, paper friends that stay with me, whose tales have become a part of me, and that I reread every few years. One digit isn't my reality for books, though I know others that can move along in my collection.The book is quick to place allowable limits on items, phrased as more of a rule than a suggestion. About the Author

Jim Allen has been a soldier, a sailor, an auto technician, an off-road driving instructor, a farmer and a writer/photographer. Some of those things all at once. For the past 24 years, he has been writing for magazines and writing books. This will be book 12, if you count second editions. Jim thought he knew a fair bit about Scouts when he started this project but soon learned differently and happily trudged up the Scout history learning curve. John Glancy comes from an IH family dating back to the 1940s He even has International Harvester listed on his birth certificate as his fathers employer. He has been an International Harvester Truck Parts salesman, later owner of an IH Scout Light truck parts business that was purchased from Navistar, producer and founder of the IH Scout & Light Truck Nationals show and swap meet, has been on the National board of directors of the International Harvester Collectors Club and was its first Webmaster. John has worked with Jim Allen in the past assisting with many magazine articles and this will be his first book.

When I heard back in January that Jim Allen was going to team up with Scout guru John Glancy to write the definitive piece on the International Harvester Scout I knew it was going to be good. Why? Well, Allen wrote one of my favorite books in my auto library, Classic 4 X 4s (Illustrated Buyer's Guide), way back in 1997. A book I go back to often for information and reading pleasure. The International Scout Encyclopedia did not disappoint!Whether you are a Scout zealot or just interested in classic 4X4's or International Harvester history you will find this book a true labor of love. Crisply written with many interesting facts, figures, history and previously unpublished photos that the authors painstakingly harvested from IH factory archives and you have yourself the ultimate book on the marque. I was especially fascinated with IH Scout racing history, product development and the aborted "Scout III" that never came to be before the plug was pulled on the Scout for the 1981 model year.This is a nice-sized coffee table book and everything is top-shelf from the binding and cover to the quality of the pics.One hint: A limited edition numbered copy of this book is being offered by Glancy's Super Scout Specialists in OH if that is your thing.

When there are few books written about an "Orphan" marque, such as International's Scout, you appreciate everything published and buy a copy of each one done.When I heard that John Glancy was working with Jim Allen, researching for a comprehensive book on the Scout, I was waiting not-so-patiently to see it come out just so I could see all the information they uncovered.After owning a Scout for nearly 30 years, I thought I was knowledgeable enough, perhaps more than most.The book has told me so many things that I had never known.This book is clearly the most comprehensive book that has ever been done on the Scout.Any buyer of this book will be getting much more than they expected.

This is a great book for the Scout community, I've been into IHs for over 20 years I own several different books and original magazines from the '60s and '70s and the research that went into this one with the Wisconsin historical society tops them all

Got this for a friend who's a huge Scout fan. I knew he'd like it, but to see him light up when he got it was worth any price. It's a huge hardbound book all about Scouts with pictures and tons of history. What's not to like?

Good information but the poor print quality and paint bleed on several pages takes away from reading this 75 dollar book. Upon further inspection the book was printed in China and that is likely the reason why the print quality is so poor. Expected more at this price point.

A generally nice book, with a few notable exceptions. My copy has some light ink lines from printing on several pages. The book's not worth returning for that, but it annoys. Base suspension ride height was increased at some point during production, and vehicle's equipped with the heavier front springs were also treated to increased ride heights. It would also have been nice to include some detailed chassis photos, as viewed from directly beneath the vehicles. Also lacking are detailed photos of the engine internals, including the timing gears that were used in lieu of a chain. A large portion of this book is devoted to various trim packages, and Scouts that were used for racing. I wish more of those pages were instead occupied by the information I previously mentioned. Despite its flaws, this book is still a "must" for Scout enthusiasts who were fortunate enough to have grown up with one in their household.

I really liked this book. Great for fans of Internations trucks and fans of the Scout. But it left me wanting more. This book could have been better but it's definitely worth buying. Lots of good history and product information.

Awesome book for any Scout lover. Really helpful in the restoration of my 75 Scout.

"Picture Perfect Posing" is the most practically useful photography book I have ever read. So many books of this type are so non-specific, speaking in generalities so that very little actionable information is given to the reader. This book is very, very specific, pointing out posing problems and presenting the reader with a defined system for fixing them.The author uses his own photos as both good and bad examples of posing, which is very encouraging since it shows the reader that it is possible to get significantly better at posing subjects through practice. While reading about the bad examples, I could directly relate to the author and how he dealt with posing when he started out, which was trying to memorize thousands of poses, then forgetting all of them during a shoot and just shouting out random posing commands, hoping for something that works. I have been there.If you come to photography from an engineering background or you just have a logical mind, Picture Perfect Posing will be a very helpful tool because it is a specific system that addresses common posing problems you will likely encounter, with specific solutions for fixing them. This is so helpful because it can be very difficult to look at a pose and figure out exactly why it doesn't work without this sort of information. For example, the author covers finger positioning, where and how hands should be placed, how noses should be pointed... all very helpful to give photographers a base to work from instead of just trying to create awesomeness from nothing.The author even touches on facial expression, although that isn't the primary focus of the book. I found this interesting because the method suggested to get good performances is similar to a famous actor direction technique: Give the person a task to concentrate on, like counting fenceposts or trying to spot exactly when the camera's shutter closes behind the lens, etc. This can make it easier for the subject to produce an engaged expression that takes the photo to the next level of professionalism, I would love to see a whole book about direction for still photography.One nitpick for future editions: On page 168 the text refers to a blue line indicating the "overlap point" of two bodies in a couple's pose. It looks like the publisher changed the blue line to a red circle without updating the text, since I do not see a blue line in the example photos.I highly recommend "Picture Perfect Posing" to photographers who need a strong base to build poses from, especially for wedding and engagement photography.

Well, I have read this book cover to cover and I am not done with it yet. It is so detailed that as I read it I highlighted certain things (amounting to about half or two thirds of the total text).It is so informative that I will say that if you are serious about model photography you certainly need to purchase this. Other than the passage of time , I can not imagine the author needs to write another book on modeling techniques or that the buyer needs to buy another one.This to me was a difficult study. No - I do not mean that it's hard to understand the book. What I mean is that it's so detailed that to fully appreciate it and get the most out of it you should study every detail he describes of a specific pose (for "every pose" illustrated in the book - one by one). If you take the time to do this and apply everything he suggest before shooting your next model - your will look very professional.There are few authors who cover so many things as this author has. I can't imagine how anyone can read this book cover to cover in a few days and expect to remember even a small fraction of it.This author has written the "Crown Jewel" of books on how to pose models. His descriptions go way beyond "standard cliches".Buy it, read slowly, highlite the descriptions of the poses you are interested in (for me that was just about everything), then go back later and formulate your next shoot - based on all the knowledge you have gained from the book - and don't worry if you have made so many notes that you can not possibly trade it in for a discount on your next purchase - because if you have taken the time to study these poses in detail you surely won't have any desire to trade it in.Finally - for your information - studying this book is not about ( what so many critics think is) imitation. It's about learning techniques and avoiding common (and and not so common) mistakes - then using this knowledge to formulate your own ideas. - Robert Pear

As an aspiring amateur portrait photographer, I have spent hours trying to figure out how to pose people, without having to spend 10 years of daily practice to master it. Most books I have seen will give you the "rules" then immediately tell you how to break them. They just leave me confused. I am left trying to memorize a few poses or doing lots of planning beforehand.This book explains WHY you do what you do in a way you can understand, and more importantly, remember. Now I finally feel like I might be able to be halfway competent at posing even without tons of experience. In addition, there are comparison photos shown, with method a and method b, you decide what looks best. And there is "homework" in each chapter with photographs for you to practice your new knowledge on, trying to figure out if and how they could have been done in a more attractive, pleasing way.It's far better to have photos where you can recognize flaws rather than a book full of perfect poses that if I knew how to do, I would not need the book.I probably won't been needing the plethora of other books I have on posing--just this one.
