"This book is painful read for numerous reasons. Romania under Communism was no less tragic than Romania under Fascism. One ventures into such subject matter knowing ahead of time that the information is going to be unpleasant. But the book doesn’t delve deeply into the real miseries caused. Instead, the Ceauşescu s are paraded out on nearly every page like grotesque marionettes, Pacepa the simple and nearly silent recorder of their excesses and venality. That they were vain and megalomaniacal, I have no doubt. But Nicolae Ceauşescu rose to power and kept it for numerous years. He couldn't have done so without a measure of intelligence and political savvy or without being propped up by collaborators. In holding the positions he purports to have had, Pacepa must have done his share of the type of fawning he describes his colleagues doing. As head of the DIE, his hands had to have gotten dirty accomplishing the deeds Ceausescu demanded. I expected deeper revelations of the actual oppression (prison conditions, numbers executed, etc.) more than the embarrassing antics of Elena and her son Nicu.Lastly, though there are numerous references to Jews, Germans, and Hungarians in Romania and Ceausescu's dislike and exploitation of them, I find it telling that there is only one passing reference to Gypsies, and that in the form of an adjective where a government official is describes as "a Gypsy looking fellow." For a country housing the largest Gypsy populations in the world, this is startling.

A first hand account of the inside workings of communist Romania. The stories are horrific and gives some inside information on how the communist government kept control over the people. My only beef with this is that the author comes out as an impartial observer in all of this. You don't get to be the head of a foreign intelligence agency by not participating in the acts he was writing about.

An absorbing account of the Ceausescu's, written from the perspective of someone who was close enough to know the real Nicolae and his wife. It is not just a biography. It is told as a story should be, with emotion, grabbing my interest. The international alliances, such as Nicolae's relationship with Yasser Arafat, give the story an international perspective, that I never considered.

As a son of a Romanian father with many family members having come from Romania to the United States, I have always known only what I was told by my family. This book helps to clear up many things which were unanswered. My uncle, a Colonel in the Romanian army, was a "food" engineer and worked on food research. When he attended military schooling for officers, his friend fellow officer was Ceasescu himself. My uncle told me little about him, but he did say that in his early years as an officer, Ceasescu was not so extreme or weird. In this book, the author, Pacepa, mentions that Ceasescu force Jews and Germans to pay for their "freedom" from Romania. I can attest to that as being very true. Also, the author mentions that bribery was a common practice to get people to do things for you. My father used to load up on "Kent" cigarettes and other American items including cash with which to buy the freedom of members of my family. Some ended up in Israel and eventually came to the US, others went by way of Italy or Greece and ended up in the US.One thing my family told me which always stuck in my mind was that in Romania, in the 60s and 70s, you never saw litter on the streets. They described immaculate streets with no trash to be seen anywhere. They made it a point to mention that because of their shock at seeing filthy streets in Chicago. I asked them why the streets were able to be maintained so clean in Romania, and they said you can get into "big trouble" if you are caught littering.Reading this book makes me ask questions about what happened after Pacepa's defection, both to him and to Romania, and it helps me to understand more about what my family had been through.I realize that the author can omit things or American Intelligence might have censored some of the book, but what I have read has both shocked me and helped me to understand. Two things, among many, which shocked me were first, I think Ceasescu was in his own way very brilliant to concoct this scheme called operation "Horizon" and other schemes as well. Scondly, I was shocked by both his and his wife's viciousness on the one hand, and her, Elena, fixation on her sexual appetite.

This book and Disinformation should be required reading. Of course most of the teachers in today's schools would burn these books. What's sad about that (that speaks volumes) is they are one of the many who are duped in to believing this lie that has been sold to them.Read these books and prepare to have your eyes opened! The worst is thinking, rather knowing some of my children have bought into the lies the current administration has sold them.YOU GOTTA READ THESE BOOKS. PLease.

Canterbury Tales (Everyman's Library)

Review

“The Canterbury Tales was written . . . during what the Middle Ages would have considered Chaucer’s old age . . . It is a quite astonishing production . . . [He was] free to experiment with narrative in a more audacious way, to challenge orthodoxies old and yet to be formulated, and to explore, exploit, enrich and subvert all the many available kinds of medieval story.” –from the Introduction by Derek Pearsall

The OBG Classics edition published September 11, 2017, claims to be "the new translation." But IF it is somehow new -- and, by the way, no translator is identified -- what exactly has been translated? What is new about it? It is still written in the difficult-to-understand Middle English Chaucer used, and apart from spelling (or misspelling?) "his" as "hise" in line-1 [see NOTE at end] and throwing in some extra commas, this is pretty much the standard version. It is handsomely formatted and has an active TOC, but no introduction, no clarifications of archaic words, nothing but the seemingly original Middle English text. Calling itself "the new translation" strongly suggests this has been translated into easier-to-understand Modern English, but such is not the case here. Chaucer certainly rates 5-stars, but I have deducted one for the misrepresentation.FYI: An excellent Modern English version will be found in the Kindle Store for $.99 by A. S. Kline.NOTE: The first line normally reads: "Whan that Aprill with his shoures soote...." The words "shoures" and "soote" are each two syllables in Middle English pronunciation; thus the entire line rightly has the number of accented syllables Chaucer intended. If "his" (a one-syllable word) were improperly changed to "hise" (turning it into a two-syllable word, pronounced his-uh) -- as is done here -- that adds an unintended and, therefore, unacceptable extra syllable. I have to assume this is merely a typo; but how many other such errors are contained herein?

If you are going to read The Canterbury Tales, this is the way to go. The Middle-English may seem intimidating at first, but it is easier than one might think to sound out and understand. Of course, the annotation helps quite a bit too. These tales and their frame perfectly capture medieval life with it's lively characters and various settings. Ranging from poetic diversions, to dramatic, to adventures, all the the way to gruesome fables, and plenty of very funny (and memorable) bawdy humor. This earthy group of classic stories has something for everyone. The modern translation is also worth having as a companion, but this fine paperback is the one for authenticity.

Let's get this clear at the start: This is a review of Jill Mann's edition of the Canterbury Tales in its Kindle version. (It's a shame that Amazon can't distinguish between different editions of the classics when posting reviews! -- hint!) About the Tales themselves, I'll say only that they are both a classic and a blast, and if you can handle the Middle English, you have to read them in that language. Jill Mann's editorial work is smart and thorough, too. The print edition is a bargain at the price -- again, if you're OK reading Middle English. The Kindle edition, though was a little clumsy to use -- though, to be fair, I don't see how all the glosses and notes could have been presented better in a e-book. Wait, yes I can. The glosses on individual words and expressions are easy to find; the more extensive notes, which are very valuable, are not. It shouldn't have been hard to add a marginal symbol to reference a Note. Hence it's only four stars, not five. But it may well be the best e-book version on the market.

Here is a brief synopsis. At the Tabard Inn, a tavern in Southwark, near London, the narrator joins a company of twenty-nine pilgrims. The pilgrims, like the narrator, are traveling to the shrine of the martyr Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The narrator gives a descriptive account of twenty-seven of these pilgrims, including a Knight, Squire, Yeoman, Prioress, Monk, Friar, Merchant, Clerk, Man of Law, Franklin, Haberdasher, Carpenter, Weaver, Dyer, Tapestry-Weaver, Cook, Shipman, Physician, Wife, Parson, Plowman, Miller, Manciple, Reeve, Summoner, Pardoner, and Host. (He does not describe the Second Nun or the Nun’s Priest, although both characters appear later in the book.) The Host, whose name, we find out in the Prologue to the Cook’s Tale, is Harry Bailey, suggests that the group ride together and entertain one another with stories. He decides that each pilgrim will tell two stories on the way to Canterbury and two on the way back. Whomever he judges to be the best storyteller will receive a meal at Bailey’s tavern, courtesy of the other pilgrims.I won't go into detail about all the tales that are told except to say that I found them witty, entertaining, and thoughtful.

Shakespeare's Words: A Glossary and Language Companion

From Booklist

The main lexical references for Shakespeare scholars in the twentieth century were first Alexander Schmidt's two-volume Shakespeare Lexicon (1874) and later C. T. Onions' Shakespeare Glossary, which appeared in 1911 and was revised by Onions in 1919. A further revision in 1986, by Robert D. Eagleson, kept Onions in print but failed, to some extent, to satisfy scholars. The new Shakespeare's Words seems likely to fill the void created by the superannuated Onions.Using the New Penguin Shakespeare as their text, the editors, linguist David Crystal and his actor son Ben Crystal, first collected all of the "problem" words flagged by the Penguin editors and then scoured the plays and sonnets for additional "difficult" words--especially words that are no longer current or that have developed a different sense since Shakespeare's time. After a few further additions, their entries totaled 21,263 under 13,626 headwords.Rather than defining a word by listing a single near synonym, the Crystals decided that a system called lexical triangulation would better reflect the complexity of Shakespeare's language. Most entries have three glosses, each providing a slightly different slant. For example, englut is glossed as "swallow up, gulp down, devour." Each entry includes part of speech, an illustrative quotation (with text and context identified), and selected references to other occurrences. Sidebars contain brief tutorials on address forms, money, weapons, and more. Readers newly acquainted with Shakespeare will benefit greatly by browsing through the Crystals' list of 100 frequently encountered words, which are accompanied by more illustrative quotations than are provided elsewhere. Other useful features are a chronology, plot synopses, diagrams illustrating interactions of characters, and 16 appendixes providing brief definitions for historical people, places, foreign terms, and other vocabulary not found in the A-Z section. This is a most ambitious work that will be of immense value to student and scholar alike, a worthy successor to the landmark volumes that preceded it. Recommended for large public and academic libraries. RBBCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

Although one can never get quite as much out of reading Shakespeare (except for the sonnets) as on can from seeing his works performed, most of us cannot see performances of many of the plays even once, much less regularly, so we can only read them. And since it was written over 400 years ago and the English language has lost much of its formerly extensive vocabulary, it is very helpful to have a lexicon that provides the reader with a better understanding of the story, characters, events, and, even, humor of these wonderful works.

My favorite reference book. Not for casual devotees of Shakespeare. But if you’re going to be writing about the Bard or, like me, trying to recreate his character n fiction, this book is indispensable. The authors call it a ‘glossary’, but it’s really a comprehensive encyclopedia of every word Shakespeare ever used in his plays and poems. It’s a Shakespearean Rosetta stone. And more than dictionary, it includes charts, tables and sections categorized by topic. Shakespearean exclamations! Shakespearean curses! Shakespearean herbs? Yes. If you go to my blog at richnovotney.com I can recommend a bunch of other Shakespeare-related books, all available at Amazon.

This resource has become indispensable when I sit down to read a play or preparing a role. It is thorough and easy to use. My one quibble comes from placement of the page numbers on the upper inside corners of the pages. What? the Upper outside corners list the first and last words of the page, but the page numbers are buried by the spine. This makes finding something by page number (like one of the many interesting and useful sidebars) rather inconvenient, as one cannot simply flip through at the bottom outside corner to find the page quickly. I hope the authors will consider changing this in future editions. But this one tiny flaw in no way negates the massive usefulness of the information and scholarship this book contains!

Bought this as a gift for my boyfriend as he writes classic style poetry. He was extremely excited when he opened the package to find this in there. I myself have taken a look through it and if you're a writer of ANY kind I would recommend this book.

Wonderful ! It's very updated! I bought this for my dad, and he's going to use it to teach his college Shakespeare course! He was excited when it came, and said it's "perfect."

This book is very helpful for anyone who has to read Shakespeare or just want to read it. I bought it to use in my Shakespearean Literature class, and it has saved my brain a number of times, helping to clarify sentences that can get confusing because of one or two words. It even gives exact examples of where the Bard uses them in his plays, giving sentence, as well as play, act, scene. It's also holding up quite well, despite being brought to class every weekday in a bag with many other things. I would definitely recommend it for anyone who wants to make reading Shakespeare easier.

The book is excellent, as the other reviews testify.People have given the Kindle version low marks, but I've found it quite serviceable. The various parts of the book are in the contents, and each letter of the lexicon is a separate chapter, so one can move among letters by swiping up and down. To find a term, simply search for it, and use your judgment in selecting the appropriate result.Usually I'd use this book by having it open on my phone or tablet, and referencing it while reading Shakespeare on my Kindle itself. This moots the issue of switching back and forth.

Great resource for Shakespeare scholars and fans alike
