Review

“WELL-RESEARCHED AND DEEPLY PRACTICAL, HOW TO FIX A BROKEN HEART PROVIDES THE VALIDATION, COMFORT, AND HOPE ANYONE WHO IS HEARTBROKEN DESPERATELY NEEDS. Weaving compelling case studies from his private practice with surprising scientific findings, Winch illustrates how little we actually know about this universal experience and why our misconceptions will set us back and delay our recovery. This compassionate and eye-opening book is a must read for anyone mourning a lost love or a cherished pet, and a compelling argument for recognizing these poorly acknowledged forms of grief.” — ESTHER PEREL, bestselling author of The State of Affairs and Mating in Captivity“Given how intense an experience heartbreak can be, it’s crazy that society’s main advice for it is “take it day by day, and eventually you’ll get over it.” I first heard Guy Winch talk about heartbreak at TED and was fascinated—and the book is even better. A GREAT READ FOR ANYONE GOING THROUGH HEARTBREAK, ANYONE TRYING TO HELP SOMEONE GO THROUGH HEARTBREAK, OR ANYONE WHO SIMPLY WANTS TO UNDERSTAND HUMANS BETTER.”? — TIM URBAN, creator of Wait But Why?    "A good starting point for anyone who wants to check out of the Heartbreak Hotel."—Kirkus

This was extremely helpful... and gave me hope that I would recover from the most painful breakup Ive ever experienced (at age 44). I would recommend this to anyone who is in the midst of anything similar.

I am in the midst of having my heart being crushed right now and this book is exactly what I need to help me. I'm going to re-read it again and a third time if I need to.

An easy read considering the topic. Author uses stories that many will identify with. He provides some coping mechanisms to get through the really rough parts. It helps to know someone understands how we react the way we do in a society that is not necessarily supportive of showing emotion.

I got this book after watching his Ted Talk that I really enjoyed. It's short, easy to read, and has a lot of practical advice. I found myself taking away a lot of what was mentioned and implementing it in my own life. I am definitely going to keep this on hand to share with my friends and to revisit if I ever get my heart broken again... lol

Reading about other people's journey through heartbreak and healing has been helpful. I hope to put some of these ideas into practice for myself. Everyone should read this book at some point. Whether to heal themselves or help a friend.

Very disappointing if you watched the TED video, there is no need to buy book, no new info in in the book, after finishing last chapter, I said That's it??

This is a fanatic book. Small book with so much helpful information. If you have every lost anyone or anything or felt the hurt of loss this is the book to read.

Excellent book with great tips on how to heal after a divorce, break up, or any loss. The author makes me feel normal for having all of the thoughts and feelings I’ve been going through. Plus, there are a lot off very practical do’s and don’t’s to help the healing process go faster and to not make things worse. I highly suggest this book!

This is a good book. This guy was on the front lines for a while & basically most everyone he flew with was killed or wounded. He survived some crazy situations. There's no writing about the big picture. This is just a straight story about one man's experiences. The writing style is very stark & self depreciating, but about a quarter of the way through you start to realize that this guy is a serious badass.I've read many books about the Russian front; it's rare to get a true picture from the Russian point of view. This is one of the better reads, in my opinion. .

This book is about a Soviet Sturmovik WWII pilot, based on his recollection of the events many years later. More than a piloting story this is a personal memoir, which unfortunately lacks some detail due to the many years that passed since the events described in it. There are very few first-hand accounts of Soviet pilots from WWII, and as such this is the biggest merit of the book. However the overall storytelling is a little disjointed and in parts it rather drags on (quite an accomplishment actually, considering the incredible events that were unfolding during the war at the Soviet front!). Being originally written in Russian and then translated probably explains in part at least the in places rather awkward language.Overall this is an interesting addition to any WWII aviation enthusiast's library, just don't expect a fast-paced action-packed bestseller!

This book provides the reader with a window looking back in time and space to events not readily accessible to English language readers. We know in the west about the Il-2 Sturmovik armored ground attack airplane but usually only from the statistics. Here Emelianenko shares the human side of the war in the air in the Great Patriotic War by a rare survivor. The author had the advantage of being a flight instructor for years before being thrown into the fray in which German fighter pilots amassed shoot-down scores in the hundreds unlike many Soviet fliers who were largely untrained and certainly inexperienced. He was an exceptional pilot. He was lucky too. And we are lucky that he survived to write this fascinating personal account.

"Red Star Against the Swastika" is an extremely well written and compelling story, told for the first time. The book is one of a series of new World War II memoirs by Red Army soldiers and airmen, which provide fresh and valuable insights into the Soviet armed forces of the Great Patriotic War. It remind us that Ivan, the Red Army soldier, was a living, breathing being, who cherished life as much as his counterparts in the West and who was willing to defend his family and his homeland fanatically and lay down his life dearly for all that he loved. In "Red Star Against the Swastika" Il-2 Shturmovik pilot Vasily Emelianenko remembers his own war against the German Luftwaffe in the skies over Soviet Russia. Developed before the Second World War for the Soviet Air Force, the Il-2 was the first plane optimized for all ground attack and close air support missions. With an armored pilot's compartment, including specially armored glass, and equipped with multiple heavy machineguns and later cannon, the Il-2 played a major role in the Red Army's defeat of the Wehrmacht in Russia.Emelianenko flew 92 sorties against the Germans, including 80 combat missions. Shot down three times, he always managed to reach home safely, once after another pilot in his squadron landed his own Sturmovik under fire to rescue Emelianenko. For his courage and successful completion of a number of critical missions, the author was awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union, Soviet Russia's highest award."Red Star Against the Swastika" reminds us of the tremendous sacrifices made by Red Army soldiers and airmen to stop the Germans, even when the odds were stacked against them. "After the first weeks of the war our troops did not have enough fighters and anti-aircraft guns left," writes Emelianenko. "Consequently, squadrons flew their attacks without any cover. German aircraft had complete superiority in the air. Soviet military pilots had to pay tremendous prices, and a very few of those who began the war in summer 1941 lasted until victory came."But, fortunately, the battle did not always go the Wehrmacht's way, and time after time, the Red Army managed to catch the Germans by surprise: "Approaching Bobruysk the Shturmoviks were flying very low. Anti-aircraft guns began to fire....The leader turned and launched the attack. Missiles hit the row of [German] bombers and exploded, tracer bullets shredded the wings with black crosses....Junkers and Messerschmitts ready for operational flights blazed up. Our aircraft came in time and did not allow the enemy planes to take off!"By 1943 the tide of battle had shifted and the resurgent Red Army seized the strategic offensive, never to lose it again. "In the fierce cruel struggle we managed to crush the enemy that brought war to our land," remembers Emelianenko, "and there is my part of strain, blood and sweat in it." Indeed. In four years of combat, the author's ground attack aircraft division lost 717 men. Two hundred of those were from the 7th Guards Ground Attack Aircraft Regiment, Emelianenko's unit.Victory thus came at a horrendous price. By the end of the Second World War, Soviet Russia had lost some 27 million people in the war, including ten million soldiers, sailors and airmen killed. And those that survived were changed forever: "Few people lived through the war without deep scars on their bodies and on their hearts," admits the author.Emelianenko concludes his story with the following words; "My friends said to me then: 'Those who were killed must live in a book. People myst know about them. And write the truth only!' I have done my best."

Very good book. As it was written years after the fall of the Soviet Union, the author was able to be honest in his account, revealing the inefficiency of the Soviet armed forces during the war. This is much better than polished histories written by people who were never there.

Good read about a Russian pilot and his years as a ground attack pilot doing his duty in Ww2. No heroics. Just a pilot, his plane and his only friends...the other pilots in his regiment. No complaints as there was one to complain to. No time to grieve over the deaths of his friends. There was always the preparation for the next mission. Recommended.

Close air support account by one of the few surviving Soviet pilots. Their mission totals dwarfed the allies, and they were fighting a more desperate battle for survival. By contrast our P47's, F4's, F6 etc had about two years of combat with limits on missions. Some of these russian pilots had hundreds. Staggering bravery. Great illustration of the effectiveness of close air support.
