I am a retired scientist [Behavioral Ecology] who bought this book wanting a brief introduction to the topic...aside from having read a few books & papers on the topic, i have been most-influenced by the oft-quoted comment: "The Philosophy of Science is as useful to scientists as Ornithology is to birds." I found this book well organized and competently-written, for the most part, though i am really not qualified to judge...nonetheless, some of his assertions are unfortunate at best, the most troubling occurring on p 2 where he claims that not all sciences "can do" experiments, using Astronomy as an example, asserting that this field must rely on "observation" [e.g., descriptive studies]...in fields where subjects/objects/things cannot be directly manipulated, scientists use mathematical models & simulations to conduct experiments--quantitative approaches fundamental to Astronomy & other physical sciences as well as to biological, including, behavioral & "social" sciences--among the "social sciences," Economics is the best example of the use of mathematics [i.e., omitting the role of quantitative approaches to scientific conduct in this context is serious, obfuscating scientific/experimental methods for the uninitiated reader]...on p 71, the author asserts, "...science is a rapidly changing activity"...again failing to highlight that in most areas of science there are data & theories that have stood the tests of time--Einstein's work would be the obvious example; however, even in Psychology, we have "lawful" formulations [e.g., reinforcement & punishment (Skinner); "matching" (Herrnstein); the "inverted-U curve; many other examples from the sciences might be cited]...other serious limitations of the book's contents might, also, be cited; the author, unless i am mistaken, fails to highlight that science is organic, often progressing in a non-linear fashion, and science proceeds mostly by consensus--that can take a very long time to achieve...finally, i was, also, concerned that, in addition to Mathematics, Okasha seems to downplay the role of Statistics and probabilistic thinking in the sciences--even in Physics & Chemistry...in brief, i learned a lot from this book, but i was, also, disturbed by several of its assertions & omissions...having said the foregoing, i read Massimo Pigliucci's review below & bow to his expertise...

I think of myself as a scientist. This clear and fascinating book helped me think about what that really means. What, for example, is "the scientific method"? Why do scientists prefer simple explanations? Can science be impartial if it's conducted by people - all of whom are unavoidably partial? I don't see the world in a whole new light but I think I have a better idea of where to look for the shadows and how to think about them.

This book would be a help for those students who have an inclination toward philosophy and aspire to comprehend science more deeply.I have just minor remarks. It would be better if there were a bit more description of quantum mechanics, namely with respect to the question whether it supports anti-realism or not, and if there were an example of the theory-ladenness of perceptions.

So this is kinda weird: I have a PhD, which stands for Doctor of Philosophy. But I have practically zero formal training in philosophy 🤷‍♂️. Philosophy of Science: A Very Short Introduction by Samir Okasha was a great survey of the field to get anyone up to speed on the foundations of science. The book tackles questions like: What is science? How is it used? Can science prove everything? Can science prove *anything*? After reading the ideas of a lot of scientists and philosophers, it’s easy to see that science is a powerful method of examining and making sense of the world we live in. It’s so good that some people think it’s the *only* way we can discover truth about reality and we should use it for everything! (a philosophy called ‘scientism’). But for what it’s worth, it’s not the only method. And for some things it’s not a very good method at all (like for example ethics, art, value judgments, the meaning of life and the human need for spiritual fulfillment). After examining a number of leading ideas in the philosophy of science, I think it’s actually more accurate to recognize that scientific knowledge and theories are *provisional* - not ‘truth’ in the absolute sense of the word, but useful approximations (subject to revision) that allow us to explain past observations and predict future ones. This philosophy is called ‘instrumentalism’, and adopted by a long list of brilliant scientists who shaped today’s refined scientific view of Nature. Highly recommend this short survey for anyone who wants to understand the power - and limits - of scientific inquiry.

By their very nature, books of the "Very Short Introduction" series cannot possibly deliver an in-depth treatment of any of their subject matters. Then again, this doesn't mean an author cannot use this accessible format to stimulate and inform the reader, while maintaining as much rigor as one can expect from books aimed at a general audience. That is exactly what Samir Okasha manages to do here. The reader will find standard sections on what science is, the basics of scientific reasoning, and the nuances of what counts as an explanation in science. But Okasha also gets into a bit more tricky territory, such as the disputes between realists and anti-realists, and even takes a balanced look at science critics (believe me, it's not easy to be fair and balanced there!). Chapter six, on sample problems in the philosophy of physics, biology and psychology, gives the reader a flavor of what actual philosophical investigation looks like. This is, of course, no substitute for more substantive books on the philosophy of science, but it sure counts as a very good short introduction.

About the Author

Tsutomu Nihei is an internationally known Japanese comic artist and draftsman. Born in 1971, Nihei made his debut in the comics world as the winner of the 1995 Afternoon Magazine Four Seasons Award for short stories. He then briefly worked as an assistant to veteran comicker Tsutomu Takahashi before making his break-through hit BLAME! (published by Tokyopop). The BLAME! franchise was so well received worldwide, that it inspired an animated mini-series and eventually drew the attention of Marvel Comics in the US. Nihei would later go on to draw Wolverine (X-Men) and HALO comics for Marvel to great fanfare. An architectural student, Nihei's early work were mainly wordless, relying on visuals and backgrounds to tell their stories. Now, his works are deeply rooted in hard science-fiction, as was seen in the multiple NY Times Bestselling books HALO: The Graphic Novel (published by Marvel Comics) and BIOmega (published by Viz Media).

Ideas here are aplenty and very exciting at that. Can't give it away but I was really immersed in how the Cibo[s] are addressed, — This is a hard review to write without inadvertently revealing spoilers. It is definitely a page turner but the mystery and awe from the two previous anthologies is no longer the focal point. The artwork is as strong as ever but the story pivots a bit here and there is more dialog than the last two anthologies. Consequently, some of dialog was a bit contemporary to our world (action movie clichés and such) which really wasn't needed and distracted from the dystopian norm.Competing A.I. personalities have been added and they unto themselves are quite gothic. I never imagined how well gothic and sci-fi go together. The formidable architecture is as gothic as you can get and Nihei's character designs with exaggerated long legs and arms (Fashion illustration to be more specific) is perfectly geared toward an environment so overwhelming immense, breathtaking and "cathedral" in the way it owns and controls the space.

These oversized volumes are beautiful. The English translations are also much better than the originals published by the now defunct Tokyo Pop.

Very pleased with the order and is exactly as described.

Art and atmosphere that I'll never forget. I look forward to reading the rest.

Tsutomu delivers yet again an amazing masterpiece. Ive yet to see this level of quality both visually and technically from other sources, and can't wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds.

Love the series

I bought this book because I was moving further and further away from conventional playing. Riffing on the same scales as everyone else gets boring after awhile so I started trying alternative tunings to force myself out of old playing habits. This book gave me the mental language to the direction I was already heading in, prioritizing clearing one's mind and just playing from a place within that existed before we learned language to explain away everything.Even if you're a conventional player, this book is great for redefining your approach to music so every note you play and how you play it and when you play it has meaning and emotional content. It's how you can escape that masturbatory competition of trying to be the world's fastest shredder to actually making a statement with your music that is a creative expression of who you are. This book is the path to becoming a master in your own right, not the master your ego thinks you should be, but the master your soul needs to be.

Zen Guitar is a simple read for anyone interested in learning guitar by looking within yourself. This IS NOT a technical manual on how to actually play, but how to think and prepare your mind, body, and soul. Here are just a few lines that I highlighted that caught my attention:Never stop listening to the sound inside you. (p25)When we empty our cup we agreed to rid ourselves of the preconceptions that block new learning. This is the attitude of the true beginner. (p26)There is joy in the struggle. (p40)Do not allow knowledge to interfere with the naturalness that music demands. One can easily overthink a part. Just play. If it feels right, it is right. (p51)We find our limits by taking on challenges. (p61)Follow through in every aspect of your training, then follow through some more. (p65)Look for the opportunity in the chance occurrence. (p90)Good leaders don't seek to make people fit into an existing model. They adjust and build a new model out of the pieces they have. (p148)

Great book. Got me thinking about why I wanted to learn guitar, and focusing on my own inner muse. I play and practice differently as a result.NOTE: This is not a "how to play guitar" course or method. It is a philosophical dissertation on learning and developing guitar skills.I have seen this book highly recommended on a number of guitar instruction websites, and it has exceeded my expectations. Some my be turned off by the "zen" focus of the book; however, the author begins each chapter/section with a supporting quote from a big-name professional that melds perfectly with the topic.

Are you ready? If you are ready for the message, this book is invaluable. No chords, no scales, no teacher, no guru. It is you and what you think about playing music. If one's ego gets involved in the process of making music there might be a problem. I am on my second reading. Insights abound, not only for music but for life. Imagine there are other possibilities out there-- just play. Reminds me sometimes of Golf in the Kingdom. As is mentioned there F*** ever getting better. It works but don't read it for that reason, just read it.

Philip Toshio Sudo really created something special in this book. As others have mentioned, you will not find any guitar course material whatsoever. There are no scales, lessons on theory, etc. Instead, Philip teaches you "the way" of Zen philosophy through guitar playing and musicianship. The book is sectioned off in different belt colors, like in martial arts, and as you progress from white to black, and then back to white, each chapter is a lesson in life and how you can relate this lesson to guitar playing. I have found this book so enlightening and eloquently worded that I am astounded it hasn't gotten more attention. This is a book I've read three times over the past few years and it is still a joy to read. This isn't a book you'll want to read from cover to cover in one sitting. I find it most helpful to read one chapter per day (the chapters are on average only 2 pages). This allows you to contemplate the information and let it sink in. Philip includes a phrase or word from Zen philosophy to associate with each chapter and lesson, and centers the information around this word and how you can apply it to your own life to become the strongest version of yourself. This is a book you'll keep around for a very long time, I promise. My favorite book.

I've been playing/learning guitar for over 30 years. This book is great because it allows you to put things into perspective. If you find yourself frustrated because you can't play like your guitar idol, can't play a particular song, can't master a certain technique, this book is for you. It is a bit cliche, but it's essentially about the journey...and you should enjoy the ride rather than whining in the back seat saying "are we there yet?!?!?!"When I hit my next slump (and it will come), I plan on rereading this book.
