Excellent reading! Very useful!

A worthy sequel to "Language Learnability and Language Development" in which Steven Pinker closely examines how children learn which syntactic constructions verbs may appear in, when and where they overgeneralize, and how they recover from their errors of overgeneralization. He posits a fairly elaborate decomposition of verb meanings into elements of motion, causation, purpose, and type of object or material involved as the basis of his theory, building on previous work by Gruber and Jackendoff on the "Thematic Relations Hypothesis" that treats much of the syntactically relevant parts of verb meanings as built on the concept of motion, literal or metaphorical.

Now that we hear so much about the post-traumatic stress syndrome that cripples a startling number of veterans returning from Iraq, we are increasingly aware of what a monumental influence trauma can have on an individual's life and on our society. But psychological traumas occur not only in the killing fields but also in seemingly ordinary homes where children and adults sometimes suffer severe psychological trauma from a variety of sources. McDonnell writes for those people who are haunted by painful personal experiences. She artfully guides her readers through lessons in the delicate process of writing about a past that is difficult and unpleasant to recall. And she holds out the hope that the process will be healing.

I plan to recommend McDonnell's guide to students in my memoir writing workshops. It's clear, simple and I think having some suggestions for writing exercises is particularly helpful to instructors and individuals alike. The simplicity and straight-forward organization of Living to Tell the Tale seems to work beautifully both with experienced writers and those new to the genre. I'm adding it to my blog, marlenesamuels.blogspot.com as a recommended source in my free downloadable reference bibliography for writers. GREAT and very practical!

This is a great book for anyone interested in learning how to write a memoir.

If you're writing your story, this little book (it's only 161 pages, including the list of recommended readings) will be a wonderful companion. It is about writing ourselves through, and out of, crises in our lives--times of pain and anguish, times of loss. It is about using the memoir as a testimony to our survival. It was written by a woman who has been teaching the memoir for sixteen years, in a college course called "Witness Narratives: Memoirs of Survival." She is also the author of her own memoir, News from the Border, the story of her life with her autistic son--and of her own difficult experience of alcoholism. The "crisis memoir," as McDonnell calls it, has become an important form, enjoying great popularity among readers. She cites Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior, Lucy Grealy's Autobiography of a Face, Mary Karr's The Liars' Club. McDonnell argues that writing is therapeutic, and that if you have experienced trials and traumas, writing your own crisis story may be a way for you to begin to heal and understand. She deals with such important questions as "talking back" to our inner censors, learning to remember painful experiences, using our imaginations to explore the past, and finding an appropriate voice for the story we have to tell. Each chapter includes useful examples, discussion, and four or five helpful writing exercises. If you have a difficult story to tell and you're finding it hard to get started on the work of writing, read this fine little book. It will show you that you aren't alone in writing about the experience of pain--and that you can use your writing to help you survive.by Susan Wittig Albertfor Story Circle Book Reviews[...]reviewing books by, for, and about women

"Memoir writing shares with fiction writing the obligation to lift from the raw material of life a tale that will shape experience, transform an event, deliver wisdom," Vivian Gornick states in her foreword to Living to Tell the Tale, a point McDonnell (who teaches memoir writing classes) proves in what follows. In the first few pages of the book we see she's a formidable talent in command of her subject: "It isn't enough just to live a life; we must be continually explaining it to ourselves, sorting, remembering, casting out the less important stuff, interpreting, sometimes justifying ourselves to ourselves."The first half of the book offers strategies (such as "learning to remember") designed to help generate material, while the second half provides techniques to use in shaping your story, complete with examples from published and student memoirs.Describing the rich content of photographs - in particular, the material gleaned from a photo from her own past - McDonnell notices, "Only after I had written and rewritten this passage did I discover that I was at least three selves within it."She goes on to describe the value of other documents and provides insight into what to tell - and what not to tell - in writing memoir. In the end, McDonnell lends an artistry to her understanding of the form that is nothing less than sensational.

The (Half) Truth is an amazing read. I love Tatum. She sure knows how to get herself into some pickles though. You know it's all going to come crashing down but you can't stop yourself for every little misunderstanding that comes out with Tatum. Jason is ready for more and you can just feel the chemistry he shares with Tatum roll off the pages as you read. As all is reviled you feel for both Jason and Tatum. Jason isn't known for second chances. He has a bit of a past reputation that his cousin likes to use against him. Returning home you can tell he is a new man and you hope Tatum is the one. I love Tatum and Jason together. There are a lot of cute and sexy moments in this one. This one is an amazing one click read I couldn't put down.

If you're like me and your best friend is quirky and socially awkward and you think it's cute and lovable, this book will be right up your alley. From cheese puffs to kitchen fires, there were times I wondered how much of Tatum's experience had been plucked from real life...because you just can't make this stuff up.Harper did an amazing job of weaving a tale of Half Truth through a love story that will have you rooting for the characters and laughing through your tears. Another well-done book by a fabulous author.

Such a good book! Loved Tatum and Jason, they had me laughing out loud through out their romance. Hopefully I get to see them again as supporting characters and make this as part of a series

Was a very enjoyable read. It was hard to put down and kept you engaged till it ended. I hated to have it end so soon.

Tatum is broken hearted. After dating her boyfriend for two years, he proposes and she couldn't be happier. However, on her birthday of all days, he back pedals with lame excuses. Unfortunately, he's also her boss and rather than give up all that she's worked for, she decides to tough it out. Who cares that he's hired his new girlfriend? Tater doesn't mind having a front row seat to their romance. Obviously. But she also doesn't want to seem like a loser. So what does she do? Tell a lie. And that lie just keeps getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And do you know what happens to liars? THEY GET CAUGHT!!So now you know the gist, right? But there is so much more to this tale. Tatum is as awkward as can be, which makes for some laughs. This girl says and does the wrong things at the very worst of times, but her heart is solid. And the hero... Jason... reformed manwhore y'all! So my thoughts🤥 easy and enjoyable read🤥 likeable characters🤥 slow build romance, although the fling part started quickly🤥 low on angst - the conflict was pretty tame🤥 no muss, no fuss🤥 I found it hard to buy into these characters actually loving each other because they shared virtually no screen time as a couple beyond their fling. I barely felt the chemistry, which was necessary because... fling!🤥 Is it bad that I was more interested in Jason's cousin, Kelsey, than the main characters themselves? I wonder if she'll get a book. She definitely drove this story, even if she was only supposed to be a sounding board and advice giver.Like I said, it was an easy read and I liked it. Between Tatum's antics and Jason turning out to be a really great guy, this story took on a life of its own. I recommend it to anyone looking for a book that will leave them with warm fuzzies

Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.Unfortunately I wasn't too fond of this novel. TheTatum and Jason's connection was lukewarm at best and their interactions was immature. She just gets dumbed by her fiance who she desperately wants back but as soon as she meets Jason it's all forgotten. Then she's kind of cold to him but has to pretend she likes him because she lied to her friends that he was her boyfriend. The writing had no depth and I felt it describes a high school relationship rather than an adult one.

This story is just unbelievable. First our girl gets dumped on her birthday by her fiancé . Rather than own it she make up a stupid lie that can’t possibly work or go unnoticed. She lies to her family and best friend, like the truth won’t come out.She waste time moaning over her ex and wanting him back because..wait for it “She’s in love with him He has moved on and hire a new pastry chief to work in restaurant she still work at that’s his new girlfriend. Tatum goes on to tell lie after lie. It’s ridiculous and at this point 1/3 into story I’m done. This is not a romance or entertainment, a woman with no morals a d low self esteem. Ladies if a man don’t want you move on if he says it’s not working believe him .I hate the message young women are being told with this foolishness
