Review

"In Language at the Speed of Sight, [Seidenberg] develops a careful argument, backed by decades of research, to show that the only responsible way to teach children to read well is to build up their abilities to connect reading with speech and then to amplify these connections through practice, developing skillful behavioral patterns hand in hand with the neurological networks that undergird them...Every teacher of young children as well as those who train them should read this book."―Wall Street Journal"Seidenberg...unravels the science of reading with great flair. He is the ideal guide - and it turns out that we need a guide to reading, even though we've been doing it most of our lives."―Washington Post"Seidenberg reviews the latest science on reading and makes an impassioned plea for putting this knowledge to use."―Scientific American"Cognitive neuroscientist Seidenberg digs deep into the science of reading to reveal the ways human beings learn how to read and process language.... Seidenberg's analysis is backed up by numerous studies and table of data. His approach is pragmatic, myth-destroying and rooted in science--and his writing makes for powerful reading."―Publishers Weekly"The neuroscience underlying [Seidenberg's] findings is complex, of course, but [he] does not often fall into thickets of technicality...his discussions are clear and accessible.... A worthy primer on the science of comprehending language."―Kirkus"No technologically advanced society exists without reading. This is the remarkable story of why and how it all works. From David Letterman's irony to posited Sumerian patent trolls, the writing is lively, informative, and supremely entertaining."―Daniel J. Levitin, best-selling author of This Is Your Brain on Music and The Organized Mind"Have you picked up the idea that reading is something that kids 'just pick up' and shouldn't be rushed into it, or that learning to read is something different from mastering something separate called 'comprehension,' or that a whole book about reading would be dull? Language at the Speed of Sight will disabuse you of all three notions and more-pick it up and marvel at how hard it will be to put it down."―John McWhorter, author of Word on the Move and Talking Back, Talking Black"Few works of science ever achieve Italo Calvino's six qualities of our best writing: Lightness, exactitude, visibility, quickness, multiplicity, and consistency. Mark Seidenberg's new book achieves just that. If every educator, parent, and policy maker would read and heed the content of this book, the rates of functional illiteracy, with all their destructive sequelae, would be significantly reduced."―Maryanne Wolf, author of Proust and the Squid"A world-renowned expert explains the science of reading with clarity and wit--anyone who loves to read will be fascinated, and teachers will absolutely devour this book."―Daniel Willingham, author of Why Don't Students Like School?"Language at the Speed of Sight is an incisive tour through the fascinating science of reading. From cuneiform to dyslexia to the future of literacy, Seidenberg is a master guide who--lucky for us--is as gifted a writer as he is a scientist."―Benjamin Bergen, author of What the F

Seidenberg is well known in the worlds of neuropsychology and special education. He has done an excellent job translating his scientific work for parents and teachers. This is not an easy read however. Parents who are just starting out (or who have reading issues themselves) may find it too technical in the middle chapters when he starts integrating the research findings. As a psychologist who diagnoses dyslexia on a regular basis, I generally suggest Overcoming Dyslexia by Sally Shaywitz when parents first get the diagnosis. But while this one is somewhat more technical, the science is fresher, and Seidenberg does a better job integrating multiple areas of research on the neuroscience of dyslexia. A very enjoyable read!

If you have any interest in language, in how the brain works, or in why we have separate schools of education, you will probably find this book fascinating - and if you also are interested in how people learn to read, so much the better. For people concerned about the achievement gap or who have young children or are dealing with dyslexia- I would call this required reading.Don't be put off by complicated discussions of brain anatomy or by the description of computer simulations in the first part of the book. I waded through these but I think the reader could skim those sections without missing too much. Dr. Seidenberg unequivocally supports phonics over whole language as the best way to teach children to read and the first part of the book presents the science underlying his position. Keep going and read the rest of the book. I will definitely be rereading it.

I volunteer as an after-school reading tutor for 3rd grade students who aren't reading on grade level. I was drawn to this book because of its subtitle "What Can Be Done About It." However, at the end of chapter 7, I find out Mr. Seidenberg doesn't know. More research needs to be done to actually figure out the best practices for teaching reading. Aaarrrrrgh! I feel like a bait and switch victim. The first chapters are pretty interesting if you want to learn how mankind created writing in the first place. Also, I was relieved to learn that he thinks speed reading schemes are just that - schemes. Now I don't have to worry about the fact that I think I read slowly. Apparently EVERYONE does. The only solid suggestion that I read in the book about "What Can Be Done About It" is to revamp the Teach for America program to be revamped as a Tutor for America program. College grads would assist teachers and provide more reading instruction for those students who are falling behind. Sounds like a good idea to me.I was expecting tips on how to be a better reading tutor and was very disappointed that this book did not deliver. The subtitle was VERY misleading.

This information is rich and deep. I am taking my time reading so I can absorb the ideas in it. I've already used some of the background knowledge for the students I tutor in reading and phonics. Way too often the kids who need to read the most don't like reading. I realized after reading Language at the Speed of Sight why kids have to read every day. Text leaves out a lot of information about sound, such as pitch, timing, and loudness. We can figure out the meaning of what we read because we can fill in the missing information most of the time without it being part of the written system. The information is predictable from other things we know about the topic, context, and spoken language. If all of this information is included in the text, it would slow down our reading. We understand what makes a written language efficient. We don’t need all of the information included in the writing. Our experience tells us what is likely to be correct. Therefore, experience with reading is what helps students read accurately and fluently with comprehension.

This was a very interesting book to read. Somehow, the author took what I might typically find to be dry topics (brain science, neurology, history of reading) and made it captivating with his sense of humor and varied vocabulary. This book confirmed my experience as a teacher that phonics is the most effective way to teach reading. Unfortunately, it did not include the best methods for teaching these skills. I had hoped to gain insight into ways to make the phonetic code easier to retain in my students' brains, but this was not included. I hope that if this author writes another book, it will present practices that have been as well researched as the cognitive processes involved in learning to read.

This book is a page-turner! Seidenberg explains the science in accessible, lucid, lively language. He is witty & friendly. His point about how reading should be taught is informed & passionate and the opposite of dogmatic. In fact, the book itself is a kind of love letter to reading: a personal world-expander, a great pleasure, a magnificent human invention--and, it turns out, a cognitive miracle to boot. Why wouldn't we do the best we can to ensure that every kid can not only read well but also relish reading? How? A first step would be to take Mark Seidenberg's advice. And mine: Every educator, psychologist, parent, scientist--and reader!--should read Language at the Speed of Sight.

So thought provoking. Great background building read for anyone working with children who struggle to read.

A true international animal fantasy...the book's Raschka-esque art—lively, childlike, colorful, and full of movement reflective of music and dance—will keep readers interested and engaged. A compelling, child-friendly tale that will increase readers' global awareness while it entertains.—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)Australian illustrator Button loves confident yet naïve lines, with a Picasso-esque air to his portraits and a touch of Gregory Christie in their poses. Painterly strokes (especially tactile on Steve himself) combine with digital touches of color for vibrant effect, and a trickly tracery of lines in a variety of colors compose zoo, city, and club behind our hero. It’s a vivacious and offbeat outing, and it’ll leave kids peering at fellow commuters in hope of a secret zoological identity.—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Steve is a gorilla who lives in a zoo in Rio. Steve and his caretaker, Antonio, love jazz music. They listened to it together. One night Antonio becomes lonely and leaves the zoo in search of Antonio. He finds a yellow hat that he uses as a disguise. Although the city is full of people playing all sorts of music and celebrating, Steve is drawn through the city by the sounds coming from a particular building. It is the sound of jazz and Steve enters in. He’s in for a treat that night! The illustrations in the book are very colorful and children probably will enjoy Steve’s journey through the city. With that said, I’m not sure how many will understand Carnival in Rio and why Steve is able to make it so far without anyone becoming suspicious. It would be good to pair this book with listening to a recording of some actual jazz music.

A classic of world food." —Anthony Bourdain"It is a delight to be returning to this book – a real classic – in its second edition. The recipes and stories are magically woven together, inspiring to read, to cook, and to eat." —Yotam Ottolenghi, chef and author, Jerusalem: A Cookbook"Intriguing, homely and delicious, the recipes are familiar as broadly Middle Eastern but they are distinctively Palestinian and many also uniquely of Gaza . . . . I've been cooking from the first edition of this book for years, since it first came out. It's the most popular cookbook in my house, hands down. I even use it to supplement other recipes when I'm cooking. Ottolenghi's Jerusalem is another favorite, but when the flavors need a little extra punch, I come back to the Gaza Kitchen. The maqlouba is a staple; when I make it for dinner parties, the cameras come out every single time. The cauliflower/beef stew with the tahina option is my personal all-time favorite. And the shrimp stew is always a huge hit.If you like mediterranean or middle eastern food at all, you will love this cookbook!

This book has a wealth of excellent recipes! In addition to that, it is full of very interesting cultural and historical facts and insights which are peculiar to Gaza and its unique cuisine. It is a vivid testimony to the resilience of Gaza Palestinians, in particular, that they use every conceivable (and inconceivable!) method to brighten and add spark to all aspects of their highly restricted lives, including their celebratory cuisine! I agree with Anthony Bordain, that it "is an egregiously unappreciated, under-reported area of gastronomy.....old school in the best meaning of the term!" I am especially favorably impressed with the authors' efforts to accurately portray the Gaza story without seeming whining, which, for sure they could do! I am convinced that it is through fully human communication of this kind that this troubled world shall one day know peace. Thank you, Laila el-Haddad and Maggie Schmitt for this wonderful contribution!

On the recipes themselves:This is an awesome, well-compiled collection of authentic Gazan home-cooking. The selections range from drinks and desserts to salads and main courses and include both local specialties and recipes common to all of the Levant. None of the recipes are particularly difficult to make and many of them are actually quite simple. Additionally, the fact that the book shows you how to make / recommends substitutes for the more "exotic" ingredients is incredibly helpful for anyone that doesn't live near a specialty market. On the rest of it:The book beautifully summarizes many of the ongoing issues in the Gaza Strip: the struggles of local farmers and fisherman, reliance on the tunnel system for basic goods, and the difference between availability and affordability. Additionally, when it comes to the women of Gaza, the authors largely step out of the picture and let the women present their own stories. The weaving of these narratives in and out of the recipes movingly highlights the role of cooking and the home in Gaza and presents narratives of food and family that will resonate will almost anyone.

I have spent extensive time in Gaza many years ago and was very happy to see the foods I ate there compiled within this amazing book. Congrats on such an outstanding book on the recipes and all the culture within Gaza. After reviewing it I immediately purchased another one for a friend and plan to buy more for gifts. Thank you for writing this cook book Mrs. El-Haddad.

Great cookbook! My only complaint is that the recipes don't list the number of servings or how many/how much each recipe/batch makes. That makes it hard to gauge how much you're making the first time through. I often cook for my extended family, so it's nice to know if I need to double the recipe.

Beautiful, sumptuous pictures, cultural information. Detailed recipes that are fabulous. The cooking of Gaza is different from the cooking of the West Bank. If you like Arabic food, it is a treasure, and would make a great present. Absolutely nothing else like it exists.

I love this cookbook, some wonderful recipes, and some unusual ones that are particularly from this area, I have other Palestinian Cookbooks, but this one is just for the Gaza strip, and I highly reccomend it.

I love learning to cook, and finding this book on Anthony Bourdain's show on CNN I ordered it like it was nothing.I have tried a couple of recipes. I say I could and I mean just that Two. I could try more buy my exhusband took it home so he can try some of the recipes. Jerk…lol
