This is a pretty neat little book. It starts out with some basic inventions and inventors. Some of these do not have a lot of information, but as you get a little farther into the book you can find a little more detailed information about some of the inventions. There is a huge variety of inventions in this book. It has airplanes, elevators, telephones, light bulbs, phonographs, cameras and more. I enjoyed the photographs that were in this book. Each little section has a photograph on the opposing page.One of the reasons I really like this book is because it has just enough information about a wide variety of inventions that my son found some things that he wants to learn more about. He has since been looking for books at the library and asking questions about these inventions. It is mildly annoying when I am the only one around to answer his questions and I have to look up the answers. When his dad is home it is easier to get answers for the technical questions this book has inspired.I bought this product full price for my family to read.
While most of the inventions featured are mechanical, you’ll also learn about the invention of the potato chip and basketball. The fact I most enjoyed learning was how early the first elevator was invented (can you guess?).What took away from the facts of the book were the numerous (!) grammatical errors, which were quite distracting to me and would make it hard to read aloud (I wouldn’t recommend having a child read this himself because there are so many errors). Also, it seemed some of the pages were out of order in the eBook version (for example. the Yale lock is first mentioned on pages 17 and 18 and then comes up again on pages 49 and 50).If you can see (and read) past the bad writing, you will learn some interesting and fun facts about various inventions over the past couple hundred years. However, I was disappointed that the examples given didn’t go back in history any further than that, but you have to stop somewhere, I guess.It should go without saying, but this is my fair, honest, and unbiased review of this product, and I only buy products that my family and I will actually use. The content of this book is as described as the title. It is strictly about the inventors and their inventions, so you would not see any dialogue between characters or story line. The descriptions are in a speech boxes in separate pages, and the next page shows the related picture related. I showed this book to my cousins (one is 5 years old and the other is 7 years old) and they did not seem to be very interested. I personally like this book, but I guess children around my cousins’ ages will have hard time with understand or even care about the inventors or inventions.There are a lot of great close-up photos that look vintage to me. Most of them are consistent with the descriptions about the inventions. However, there was one picture that is little confusing to me. When the author talks about the first elevator, the photo shows a machine that I honestly cannot tell whether it is an elevator machine or not. Personally, if I seriously want the kids to know who the inventors are, I would want to see photos of the inventors next to the descriptions.This book has a really nice format and easy for kids, or even adults to read. My complaints above are really minor compared to how much effort the author put into this book. Overall, they have nice illustrations and fun facts about the inventors/ inventions.I got to read this book for free in exchange for my honest opinion. I wrote my review above based on my experience after reading this book with my little cousins. If you are interested, you can have the book downloaded straight to your Kindle eBook with just one click. If you prefer the paperback version, you can purchase it for only $9.67. I think this book did a good job on presenting the information of invention and inventors to the younger audience. I honestly would buy this book for my little cousins so that they can read it on their iPad.
I decided to try this book, well I got it for my 10 yr old science nerd. ha-ha. He did 'like' the book but suggests that it'd be better for either younger kinds or maybe not(admitted) nerds. It's mostly pictures, which can either be really neat or open up new discussions and Googling to expand on the info. Which he didn't mind. For my boy it was like opening another door into things, people and places he hadn't felt the need or desire to explore as of yet. Very cool.I received this item for free or at a discount in exchange for my fair, honest review. I wouldn't buy regardless of the cost if I truely didn't want to try it. I will warn you, I am a 'bubbly' person. If I'm happy, you'll know it by my massive use of exclamation points!!! If you don't see those, then it's a better than just ok item but not a 'squee worthy' item in my life. If it's a 'bad' item, have no doubt, I'm NOT shy, I'll say it too!!
