The Language of Angels: A Story About the Reinvention of Hebrew, by Richard Michelson

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3—Hebrew as a colloquial language died out around 200 BCE, when Jews were driven out of Jerusalem and settled in various places around the world. They learned the languages of their adopted countries and used Hebrew only for prayer. Eliezer Ben-Yehuda is credited with reinventing Hebrew as the unifying language of the Jewish people, and he dedicated his entire life to creating a modern Hebrew dictionary. Michelson tells his story through the eyes of Ben-Yehuda's young son, Ben-Zion, who grew up in Jerusalem in the 1880s. While the other children in his neighborhood spoke Yiddish, Arabic, Spanish, or Ladino, Ben-Zion's father insisted that he speak only Hebrew. He wanted Ben-Zion to be "the first child in more than two thousand years who [would] grow up speaking only the beauty of our ancient tongue." Ben-Zion helped his father create new Hebrew words for "ice cream," "bicycle," and "school"—and within one generation, modern Hebrew was born. Inspired by illuminated manuscripts, the bright, decorative watercolor illustrations in oranges and reds beautifully complement the text and integrate Hebrew letters and words throughout. A comprehensive three-page afterword provides additional information about Ben-Zion and his parents, as well as the history of Hebrew, Jerusalem, and the modern state of Israel. VERDICT Hebrew teachers and students in Jewish schools will welcome this gorgeous new picture book about how the language developed and the impact of one person's perseverance on an entire people.—Rachel Kamin, North Suburban Synagogue Beth El, Highland Park, IL

It isn't easy being the child of a visionary. Ben-Zion's father is Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, a man determined to revive Hebrew as a living, everyday language—even though most of his fellow Jews in 19th-century Jerusalem accuse him of sacrilege and are content speaking Yiddish or the languages of their native lands. Eliezer insists on raising Ben-Zion as the first native speaker of modern Hebrew, which makes for tense family moments and a lonely childhood. But gradually, father and son persuade other children that speaking Hebrew might not be such a bad idea, and that they can have a hand in building the language "word by word." Gudeon (Grandma's Wedding Album) turns Hebrew letters and words into graphic elements that dance across the pages and frame the text, although it's not enough to counter the wooden feel of her vignettes. But Michelson (Fascinating: The Life of Leonard Nimoy) knows how to turn a complex story into both a brain tickler (how do you invent a word for "ice cream" or "bicycle"?) and a compelling emotional journey. Endnotes provide additional context, including where Michelson's story diverges from the historical record.—Publishers WeeklyThe ancient Hebrew language enters the modern world. In 1885 Jerusalem, a young boy named Ben-Zion cannot converse with the polyglot children of his age because his father has decreed that he speak only Hebrew, "the first child in more than two thousand years" to do so. The father, Eliezer Ben-Yehuda, is a Zionist immigrant to Palestine and fervently believes that Jews from every country, speaking so many different languages, should return to the language of their ancestors and of Jewish Scripture. Ben-Zion is not popular in the neighborhood; some consider Hebrew a holy tongue to be used only in prayer. The father persists and finds that he needs to invent words to modernize the ancient language. Thus, by combining the Hebrew words for "wheel" and for "a pair of" he creates a word for bicycle. Ben-Yehuda's work leads to a network of schools, a dictionary, and the eventual designation of Hebrew in 1948 as the national language of Israel. Michelson's account, based on history, is presented as a story with invented dialogue, which he addresses in his author's note. Gudeon's digitized watercolor illustrations, full of children, are lively and feature Hebrew words and letters as part of the page design. A lively introduction to the work of a Hebrew language scholar and lover—and his family.  - Kirkus Reviews Hebrew as a colloquial language died out around 200 BCE, when Jews were driven out of Jerusalem and settled in various places around the world. They learned the languages of their adopted countries and used Hebrew only for prayer. Although always used for religious prayers and rites, Hebrew had died out as a spoken language more than 2,000 years before and lacked terms for modern ideas and objects. Ben-Yehuda created new words, often borrowing from related languages, and published a modern Hebrew dictionary, his milon. Through his efforts, Hebrew became Israel's official language in 1948. Michelson's text draws on Ben-Yehuda's memoirs, although he tells this story from the perspective of Ben-Yehuda's young son, Ben-Zion. Gudeon's mixed-media illustrations depict period clothing and architecture, and she effectively incorporates Hebrew letters and words into the art. Appended with a generous afterword explaining the changes Michelson made to this story, this title also offers information about important individuals, the Hebrew language, and Palestine. With a smoothly written text and an appealing child focus, this makes a perfect resource for religious school collections and public library language shelves.—Booklist

An amazing story of how the Hebrew language was resurrected, great story for kids!

Just a beautiful book

This book is about famous father-and-son Hebrew language pioneers, Eliezer and Itamar Ben Yehuda. When Eliezer Ben Yehuda arrived in Jerusalem in 1881, the spoken languages of the Jews were Yiddish and Ladino....and other hybrid combos .... plus the local languages where they lived. Hebrew was reserved for prayer and study.Ben Yehuda, lexicographer and journalist, was determined to revive Hebrew as a spoken language. He was so successful that by the end of 1922, the British Mandate authorities recognized Hebrew as the official Jewish Language. This book is the story of that accomplishment -- how Ben Yehuda created the first modern Hebrew-speaking family, and the difficulties this made for his son, Itamar. Which brings us to the book's opening line, "Once there was a child without a friend". When Ben Yehuda and his wife made aliyah, he was determined to create a pure Hebrew-speaking atmosphere in their home. Their son, Itamar, was required to hear, speak and communicate exclusively in Hebrew and was isolated from non-Hebrew speakers. Be prepared for the sad portions of the book -- where seven-year-old Itamar is STILL without a friend. He is finally given a puppy to talk to -- the fact that the puppy died is not mentioned in the story. He is bullied by the local children. Be sure your young readers know that despite the lonelines and isolation of his childhood, Itamar grew up to be a journalist like his dad and changed his name to Itamar Ben Avi -- son of my father. The most recent figures available give the number of Hebrew speakers worldwide as nine million. HIstorian Cecil Roth said it best: “Before Ben-Yehuda... Jews could speak Hebrew; after him they did.”

Not just a good book for any child (let's say, ages 5 to 10), who will read it and get something out of it, but the sort of topic that should broaden a child's perspective and understanding of our world. That a language might have no native speakers, yet still be remembered; that a language can be revived and supplemented to bring it back to life; that it might take a single-minded dedication to do such a thing; that a child growing up as a sole native-speaker of this language might have great difficulties, and be something of a misfit, until it finally "catches on"... Any child who is learning even a few words of Hebrew should certainly know all this, and here's a great book to accomplish just that.

Based on a true story, Eliezer wants his son, Ben-Zion, to speak only Hebrew. He even covers his ears when animals make noises because they are not part of "the Language of Angels."The first obstacle? Hebrew hadn't been spoken as a main language in over 2000 years. The second obstacle? Ben-Zion is lonely without a way to communicate with other kids. Eliezer begins to teach them Hebrew, too, for his son's sake and also with the hope that they will teach their parents. The third obstacle? There were no Hebrew words to describe modern objects. The children take part in inventing new words for the "milon" ("a place for words" where Eliezer began recording every Hebrew word). This incredible story is told in a way children can understand with concepts they can relate to, including loneliness and bullying. The beautiful art is a perfect match for the text. I was fascinated by the history behind this book and enjoyed learning more in the Afterword. For instance, when Eliezer moved to Jerusalem in 1881, no one spoke Hebrew (except in prayer). Today, more than three million people speak it—an accomplishment that amazes me!

As a French girl from Lyon, I take my food quite seriously, but I always find funny when people assume that something has to be complicated to qualify as French cuisine. Yes, we have amazing chefs but the food I prefer and the one I grew up with is simple and delicious...made with great ingredients and the desire to share a good meal. Cecile's book is exactly that. Simple recipes which taste of Sundays at home. Her tomato and mustard tart recipe reminds me of summers in Southern France with my grandparents, and her apple tart one of picnics with family and friends. Grab her book, a nice bottle of wine, and whatever you end up cooking make sure to share it around the table with loved ones. And, VOILA!

I love the easy, encouraging style of Cécile Delarue’s writing. You have the sense that she is right there in the kitchen cooking with you and cheering along your work. As promised, the recipes are simple and effortless – definitely French comfort food in many instances. It is often difficult to source the ingredients here in the US that are found in French cookbooks. However, Delarue is a French expat living, cooking and sourcing her food here in the US so the recipes do not contain a range of ingredients that can’t be found in the stores.Delarue has also labeled the recipes as classic, vegan, vegetarian, dairy free, under 30 minutes, etc which I think this will be quite helpful to a variety of readers. Plus she gives you wine pairings! The French Cooking Class and French Basics chapters had me anxious to plan this week’s menu and get started cooking!

So to start I will say, I have made a few recipes from this book and they were truly delicious. However, this is not really what I would call effortless, nor have I found much yet for week night cooking main meals. Some recipes do call for a few ingredients. No dish is too out of control. I read over the cassoulet recipe and while i know it's not easy I rolled my eyes away the mention of 3 pans. Of course I'll still have to try to make it one day. But I wouldn't call it effortless. Some recipes call for hard to get ingredients. One holiday recipe calls for 1lb of chestnuts. It is a pain to roast or boil and peel a lb of chestnuts so I get irked when I see it as a casual ingredient. Also some of her instructions ate vague. Like: stuff the chicken with lemon. The ingredient list just says lemon. If I was dumb and young I could maybe see myself stupidly putting a whole lemon in (ok maybe young me wouldn't be that dumb). Another recipe says fill a pot with water and add meat. Doesn't say how big a pot or how much water. It just bugs me. I can use common sense bird it's definitely for cooks with more experience. If you have little cooking experience don't get this book or prepared to be a bit nervous filling up the pot.If you know how to cook, it's great

Beautiful cookbook!!!! I follow both Cécile's Facebook and Instagram page and was absolutely thrilled to see she had a cookbook coming out!!! As soon as it arrived I opened it up and began flipping through the pages trying to decide which recipe I was going to make first! I found myself incredibly excited that all these recipes from her upbringing we're translated into recipes we could make from ingredients accessible here in the US and that they were still French approved!I love how the book is broken up, starting with "French Cooking Class" and moving on to "French Basics"!Each recipe lists if it is Gluten free, Dairy free, Under 30 minutes, Vegetarian, etc and also has a little "story", explanation or history of the recipe!I love the addition of the "Le Petit Truc" at the bottom of each recipe! The photograpy is beautiful! Takes me right back to France!I am very pleased with this cookbook, it is simple for us to follow, elegant, classically French and has a little bit of everything!Merci beaucoup Cécile!!!

My second cookbook purchase by author Cécile Delarue. Recipes are easy to plan and simple to make. The arrival of the cookbook coincided with the release of French style yogurt cups (5 oz - 2/3 cup) in the US. Looking forward to making a traditional Gâteau au yaourt (Yogurt cake page 204) using a glass French yogurt cup.

I bought this book because I wanted a resource for no-fuss French fare, the sort of thing I can easily incorporate into my daily routine. Cecile's recipes were exactly what I was looking for! They are so simple and easy to follow, yet at the same time healthy and elegant. I have already made her pot au feu, which was easy to do and the whole family loved it. The real showstopper so far was her recipe for chocolate mousse - to die for! It was so easy to make with ingredients that I already had to hand, but even better my guests were literally moaning in enjoyment after every bite. I can't wait to try more of her recipes. Great for busy cooks that still like to experiment and try new things. Also great for us working moms. Bravo Cecile!

Elegant enough for dinner with friends but so simple too! And the taste is AMAZING! I enjoy the stories throughout the cookbook too. Cecile has made me love her even more 💖

I love this cookbook. I buy lots of cookbooks and try new recipes all the time. And this has become my favorite! It is French food, but healthy! And easy to prepare. It also lists which recipes are gluten free. I just LOVE this book and will probably buy copies for friends as gifts, I love it that much!

Thinking Creatively About Human Relations All of us want two things out of life: Success and Happiness. All of us are different. Your idea of success may be different from mine. But there is one big factor which all of us must learn to deal with if we are to be successful and happy. The one common denominator to all success and happiness is other people. Various scientific studies have proven that if you learn how to deal with other people, you will have gone 85% of the way down the road to success in any business, occupation, or profession, and about 99% of the way to personal happiness. Merely getting along isn't the answer. What counts is a way to deal with people that will bring us personal satisfaction and, at the same time, not trample on others' egos. Human relations is the science of dealing with people in such a way that our egos and their egos remain intact. And this is the only method of getting along with people that ever results in any real success or satisfaction. The reason 90% of people fail in life is a failure to deal successfully with people. Look around you. Are the most successful people those with the most brains, the most skill? Are the people who are the happiest and get the most fun out of life so much smarter than the other people you know? If you will stop and think a moment, the chances are that you will say that the people you know who are the most successful, and enjoy life the most, are those who "have a way" with people. Your personality problems are your problems with other people. There are millions of people today who are self-conscious, shy, and ill-at-ease in social situations. They feel inferior and never realize that their real problem is a human relations problem. It never seems to get across to them that their failure as a personality is a failure in learning to deal successfully with people. There are almost as many who, at least on the surface, seem to be the very opposite of the shy, retiring type. They appear to be self-assured. They are "bossy" and dominate any social situation they are in, whether it is the home, the office, or the club. Yet they, too, realize that something is missing. They wonder why their employees or their families do not appreciate them. They wonder why people do not cooperate more willingly; why it is necessary to continually force people into line. And, most of all, they realize in their more candid moments, that the people they are most anxious to impress never really give them the approval and acceptance they crave. They attempt to force cooperation, loyalty and friendship; to push people to produce for them. But, the one thing they cannot force is the thing they want the most: they cannot force people to like them. They never really get what they want because they have never mastered the art of dealing with people. Whether we like it or not, people are here to stay. In our modern world, we simply cannot achieve any success or happiness without taking other people into account. The doctor, the lawyer, the salesperson who enjoys the most success is not necessarily the one who is the most intelligent or the the most skillful in the mechanics of his or her job. The husband and wife who are the happiest are not the ones who are the most attractive. Look for a success in any endeavor and you will find someone who has mastered the knack of dealing with peopleÂ… a person who has a "way" with others. Skill in human relations is similar to skill in any other field, in that success depends on understanding and mastering certain basic general principles. You must not only know what to do, but why you're doing it. As far as basic principles are concerned, people are all the same. Yet each individual person you meet is different. If you attempted to learn some gimmick to deal successfully with each separate individual you met, you would be face with a hopeless task. Influencing people is an art, not a gimmick. When you apply gimmicks in a superficial, mechanical manner, you go through the same motions as the person who "has a way," but it doesn't work for you. The purpose of this book is to give you knowledge based upon an understanding of human nature: why people act the way they do. The methods presented in this book have been tested on thousands of people who have attended my human relations seminars. They are not just my pet ideas of how you should deal with people, but ideas that have stood the test of how you must deal with people. That is, if you want to get along with them and get what you want at the same time. Yes, we all want success and happiness. And the day is long past, if it ever existed, when you could achieve these goals by forcing people to give you what you want. And begging is no better, for no one has respect for, or any desire to help, the person who constantly kowtows and literally goes around with his hand out, begging other people to like him. The one successful way to get the things you want from life is to acquire skill in dealing with people. Read on and you will learn how.

This is like a cliffnotes version of Giblin's actual book "How to have confidence and power in dealing with people" which I would HIGHLY recommend over this one.I could see how the two could be companions, with a reader perhaps reading the full book and then reading over this cliffnote to make sure the high points are recalled, but this "book" doesn't really stand on its own.I assume the publication of this was a marketing ploy to make new readers hungry for more, and therefore more willing to buy the real book, but if you've already read his real books it instead has the opposite effect, leaving readers sore because it is essentially a rehashing of what has already been paid for. It leaves one feeling as if they just paid an extra $4 on top of what was already paid for the original book.Quite a bad move for someone who claims to be so good at dealing with people...

I keep thinking about butter while i was reading this. This book soothed me like warm butter. It helped me become less arrogant and more understanding. the methods seem to be very effective. i was operating erroneously for some time. this book is simple, but teaches a lot! I really like this little pamphlet and highly recommend it. Thank you Les Giblin.

Hmm... So So - expected better and more substantial work...It's a bit superficial - I wanted to have more detail and examples...Well, if you like to think deeper, don't buy this - only if you are happy with instant solutions (short enough be finished in couple of hours anyway).

Great book regarding developing people skills, and provides specific tools to aid in peoplerelations.EDIT: Still review this book regularly and use its contents all the time. Great write up on developing this art in dealing with people.

Its an easy read and page turner. Finished in three days. Clear and concise reading, clear views on the topic as well.Great insight on people and how to work with rude and pin up people who thinks their better than anyone. Awesome, buy..

Very useful tool for anyone besides Robinson Caruso! In other words, if you deal with people, this will be helpful!

I read Skills with People and loved it! This book seems to go into more detail and is really helpful. If our children were being taught these types of skills instead of a better way to subtract 20 from 32 in schools, they would be more confident and better equipped to succeed in everything they do.

A fantastic, practical manual on the science of human engineering. A MUST read for anyone who desires to achieve any level of success in any field. This book should be in every educational curriculum on the planet. Understanding and dealing effectively with people is one of the keys to all success and Giblin knocks it out of the park with "The Art of Dealing with People."

Definitely a great book to learn about your new camera. I was between this and the "D5600 for Dummies"I ended up buying both.. This book is without a doubt a better buy. I wish I would have only purchased this book. it is very thorough.

Excellent. If you have a Nikon D5600, you will find this book to be very useful. The only guide I've seen that not only describes the camera and its many controls, but also shows you how to use the camera to its maximum efficiency.

Really thorough, well written manual as expected from David Busch. In 2004 I bought his guide for one of the first Nikon digital SLRs, the Nikon D70s, and it was also excellent and informative, not only about how to use the camera itself, but also with very useful and clearly stated information about how to shoot various kinds of photos in general. After that early manual, I expected this one to be excellent as well, and it is. Everything is clearly written and easy to understand. There are plenty of photos to illustrate pretty much every topic he discusses, and all the photos are extremely helpful. to your comprehension of a subject. The manuals (usually a downloadable PDF now) that come with cameras these days are not nearly as complete or easy to understand as camera guides such as this one. The Nikon manual might tell you what setting choices are, but it doesn't tell you why to choose a particular setting, whereas this guide tells you why you should or perhaps should not choose a setting. This is a great book to read to understand your new D5600, and after studying it, it is still a great reference that you will use down the road. Worth every penny and highly recommended, especially if you are new to digital cameras. The D5600 is a fabulous camera, and it's worth your time to fully understand all that it can do.

I'm just going to say, I'm not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I knew I was taking a chance buying the camera. Would I be able to utilize the features? Or should I have stayed with the simpler type? I love the camera. I am quite certain I wouldn't be enjoying it so if I didn't have this book to help me. I've had it 8 months and haven't had a need to search any farther for additional information. I'm amazed at how much is in here. I'm sure it would be a great book for someone with plenty of DSLR experience too. If you're searching for a book to go with your D5600, I highly recommend this one. The author, David D. Busch, has written other books as well. I'd be willing to bet are 5 star also. Mine was even autographed : ) Thanks Mr. Busch

The D5600 is a quite different than a point and shoot camera. Sure, it's simple enough that you can be up and photographing with it in less than an hour. Newbies can even use it as a point and shoot camera with different lenses. But Mr. Busch not only explains the basics but takes the reader beyond so that they are aware of all the features of the D5600 and they can use as many as they choose. David Busch's Nikon D5600 Guide to Digital SLR Photography

Very use full as I have a 5600 on order. I just started to read it. The book contains color photos and detailed instructions. I would recommend it if you want to get creative instead of using the auto function.

Great help to me in getting up to speed rapidly with this very nice camera. Value-priced camera, yet very deep feature set that requires a fair amount of study to master.

Very comprehensive and easy to read with lots of illustrations and examples. An excellent resource for learning to use the D5600. The book would be valuable to both novices and experienced photographers.
