Amazon.com Review

Dispatches from the Freud Wars consists of six of John Forrester's recent essays on Freudian psychoanalysis and its cultural implications, as well as an amusing epilogue in which the ghost of Freud is allowed to comment on current reactions to his thoughts. In the introduction, Forrester states the underlying rationale of the essays: "The more one knows about Freud--the more one has unlearned what one was culturally hard-wired to know about him--the more interesting and surprising and thought-provoking he becomes." Forrester is at his best in the essays that are primarily historical. His discussions of the bizarre love triangle involving Freud's disciple Sandor Ferenczi; Freud's penchant for collection (of objets d'art as well as dreams, jokes, and parapraxes); and the historiography of the psychoanalytic movement are lucid, insightful, and eminently worthwhile. His critical essays are not as good. While "Justice, Envy, and Psychoanalysis" interestingly criticizes John Rawls's arguments against the idea--found in Mandeville, Nietzsche, and Freud--that justice is ultimately based on envy, it is regrettably also somewhat silly on the topic of penis envy. The title essay, moreover, is captious in argument and peevish in tone, as Forrester reacts to the anti-Freudian animadversions of Frederick Crews and Stanley Fish by focusing on rhetorical weaknesses in their arguments rather than on the arguments themselves. Read Dispatches from the Freud Wars for the historical background to the struggle, but not for the latest news from the front. --Glenn Branch

Review

Where Forrester hits the mark is his insight on the passionate intensity of the battles between Freud and his critics, and the analogy he makes between this struggle and the one between analyst and his or her patient. It may be possible, in fact, to read the entire commentary on Freud as that between analysand and analyst, all projecting part of their shadow onto Freud and struggling in the trenches of transference and countertransference. It is to Forrester's credit that he sees this and shows it to us in this provocative book. (Claire Douglas Washington Post Book World)[This book, along with Truth Games]…present[s] a series of eight wide-ranging but interconnected essays. Taken as an ensemble, they deal with the history of psychoanalysis, redefinitions of psychoanalysis and what it means to be a Freudian, psychoanalytic readings of contemporary cultural issues, discussions of the scientific status of psychoanalysis and an impassioned defence of psychoanalysis…The essays are elegantly written, and open up a number of new perspectives on these issues, as well as putting forward new formulations of more familiar ones…Anyone interested in the history of psychoanalysis and the cultural location of psychoanalysis today is likely to find these essays stimulating, engaging and inviting of dialogue. (Sonu Shamdasani Medical History)Dispatches from the Freud Wars is compulsively readable, a revision of Freud's life and thought, brilliantly written, full of enticing detail. (A.S. Byatt The Sunday Times)An expert at the shifting sands of philosophical argument, Forrester continually undercuts the grounds of the varieties of criticisms aimed at psychoanalytic theory, technique and cultural significance. Love him or hate him, Forrester rightly insists, we cannot pretend that Freud did not exist, and that his extensive writings have not permanently influenced the 20th century's received views on human nature, hermeneutics and the nature of scientific inquiry...To a large extent then, this a book about reading Freud, rhetorically structured so that the final charges of misreading leveled against such critics of psychoanalysis as Frederick Crews and Adolph Grünbaum ring convincing and true. Forrester's accomplishment here is to deflect the accusations of psychoanalysis as pseudo-science back onto the accusers, who do not understand that psychoanalysis is not, and never was intended to be, rocket science. (Renée Kingcaid Psychoanalytic Studies)Freud could hardly have a doughtier champion. Forrester's writerly and polemical skills are impressive, and make for an utterly fascinating book. (A. C. Grayling Financial Times)John Forrester is well known for his translations of Lacan and for his books on psychoanalysis. This excellent collection of essays is elegantly readable. The title essay presents a measured, reasonable defense of Freud which neither conceals his flaws nor blackens his character. (Anthony Storr The Times)Forrester, interestingly, uses Freud's thinking to reconsider such subjects as the links between envy and justice, and the nature of discretion as opposed to transgression...[His] book is consistently challenging. (Paul Roazen Globe & Mail)Here there are excellent essays on Freud's lurid relationship with Sandor Ferenczi, and on Freud the collector of antiquities. (Justin Wintle The Independent)Although there were many reasons for thinking that the complacencies of the American psychoanalytic establishment deserved a thorough shaking-up, it is disconcerting that an impression may be now abroad that psychoanalysis deserved to be seen as junk science. On this score Forrester is, in my opinion, on the side of the angels. He takes Freud seriously as a figure within intellectual history, and in the last chapter of this book Forrester tries to deal with criticisms...Forrester rightly sees Freud as part of the Western moral thought, a thinker whose ethical practices and preachings deserve close scrutiny. (Paul Roazen Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences)[These] six long, probing essays on Freudian psychoanalysis and its cultural legacy...stand in welcome contrast to some of the recent facile debunkings of Freudianism. Forrester...writes on topics ranging from justice and envy to the deeper meaning of the sculptures and other objects from classical antiquity that Freud collected. He is particularly adept at making cross-cultural and interdisciplinary links...The great merit of Forrester's book is that it takes both Freud and his critics seriously. The author is both rigorous about classical psychoanalysis's limitations and deeply respectful of its enormous contributions to our culture and specifically our understanding of the self. He has made a profound, sometimes scintillating, contribution to the history of this most multifaceted science and craft. (Kirkus Reviews)

A southern author telling a southern story. A little sad because I'm finished with the book, but it's that good of a read. Once I started, I couldn't stop.I was hooked from the epigraph. This is my favorite Donna Everhart book yet. It's longer than the first two. The characters are fully developed and there is a true family focus rather than one or two individuals.Donna gives all the right details to place the reader where the story occurs. Weather, plants, scents, descriptions of food, furniture, linens, customs - I knew exactly where I was for the entire book.Sonny Creech will be a favorite of mine for a long time.

Donna Everhart has done it again! This book tells the story of Sonny Creech and her family in North Carolina in the 1950s. We are along for the ride as they encounter bigotry and hatred in that time period and watch as Sonny's life collapses after the death of her father. This author crafts characters that are multi-faceted and she applies her understanding of human nature to all, even the antagonists, so they are human beings instead of tired stereotypes. The only thing I didn't like about this book was it ended. Can't wait to read her next book.

I just received this book and once I started reading it I honestly couldn't stop. My heart ached for those kids, and anger filled my heart when it came to their mother. Although I understood her reasoning for doing what she did I was still overwhelmed with anger. This book was so worth waiting for. The sad part is it's only her 3rd book and i've already read the other two and throughly enjoyed them also. Now I have to wait for her to write another one, and waiting for her books is so hard. She's at the top of mt favorite authors list!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was difficult to read at times but you had to keep pressing and knowing there would be a light and a twist at the end of the tunnel. I appreciated Sonny’s strength for a young girl. Also her innocence at some of the going’s on as the story unfolds. All I can say is read it and feel the characters. Like Sonny and Daniel said, “That Mr Fowler is a sumbitch.”

I loved loved this book. It was so good and very well written. It takes place in the fifties in North Carolina. It had me from page one. I started it at ten o clock, read until one, went to sleep and got up early so I could finish it.

I found the book more like an adventure in human complexity. The author created a despicable male character, Frank Fowler. He created hell for the family and was eventually dispatched by a poison Pie. Fun read.

Sad. Tragic. Children thrown into a very sad adult world.

Linda Zagon's review Nov 29, 2018 · editit was amazingI loved everything about Donna Everhart’s novel, “The Forgiving Kind”. “The Forgiving Kind” has all the ingredients of an amazing, intriguing, intense, captivating, riveting, enthralling and thought-provoking Novel. The Genres for this book are Fiction, Suspense, Mystery and History. The timeline for this book is set in the 1950’s in North Carolina. The “Forgiving Kind” has a flavor of “To Kill A Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.This is a coming of age story. It is a story of good and evil. It is a story of prejudice, bigotry, hatred and bias that existed in the 1950’s. It is a story of good people who farm the land, cotton and soil. It also is a story of survival, family, love and hope. The author describes her colorful cast of characters as complex, complicated, ignorant, good and evil, and dysfunctional.Twelve year old Martha “Sonny” Creech loves working with the soil, and has inherited the skill of finding water from her deceased father. The other children make fun “Sonny” and call her a “water witch”. Sonny finds comfort with her friend Daniel, who has his own quirky personality and problems. Mrs. Creech and her two sons and Sonny are left in a financial dilemma when her husband dies. Mrs. Creech is forced to accept an offer of help from Frank Fowler a neighbor that has motives of his own. In order to survive, the Creech family has to grow cotton, pick it and sell it. Rumors are circulating that there will be a drought. How will the Creech family survive?Sonny finds that there are some secrets in her family. Donna Everhart vividly describes the land, the soil, and the process of planting. There are twists and turns. It is a long hot summer and it is dangerous. If only certain people would get their just desserts.I appreciate that the author discusses important issues as homosexuality, race, color, laws, bigotry and prejudice, ignorance, justice and hope. I highly recommend this important novel to those readers who enjoy a thought -provoking story.7 likes

One can hardly deny that making money runs the world today. There are the specialists in making easy money. These are broadly characterized as speculators and gamblers.Speculation and gambling have several differences.Speculation involves increasing one’s chances to profit by various means such as news study, pondering, technical analysis, margin trading, hedging, options, and some have used psychics all with the aim of gaming profit from short or medium term market value fluctuations.Gambling is wagering by means of an uncertain event with the aim of gaining additional assets. It requires consideration, chance, and a prize. The striking feature is that a small fee or amount is required with a chancy large return within a short time.Bringing Down the House is the true story of how six MIT students turned gambling into speculation to fleece Las Vegas for millions. The best and brightest students are recruited by an eccentric former teacher with teeth like a picket fence of spades, diamonds, clubs and hearts to practice in a college backroom as the MIT Blackjack Team before invading the strip. The nice thing about the book is that the secrets of card counting, shuffle study, ace cutting, hi-low counting, group spotters, third base coaches, card count code words, statistic indexes, and other tips the students used and the casinos don’t want you to know are revealed. Of course, one wonders the secret they did not reveal to win.MIT proved blackjack is beatable and Ben Mezrich tells it with a suitable degree of suspense.Speculation and gambling are similar in the manner in which they can acquire profit in a short time. Both methods involve risk but a speculator may learn more skills than a gambler’s plain luck to lower his risk. One may invest his hard earned money in intelligence such as Bringing Down the House.

After reading Bringing Down the House, I was excited and fascinated by the luxury life in Las Vegas and the world of card counting. This is a story that's told through the eyes of the author about a group of math geniuses, who used the techniques of card counting. They worked as teams and legally won millions of dollars over just a few years by spending their weekends down in Vegas. The author, Ben Mezrich, wrote the book based a real life story that is almost too incredible to believe. Therefore, even though It's a real story, It’s written like a realistic fiction novel. All the events that happened in the whole story were so intense that I felt like I was thrust into a roller coaster ride. Moreover, Mezrich visualized most of his sentences and sometimes made it melodramatic. He used lots of visual metaphors and descriptions of characters’ inside thoughts. Overall, this is a thrilling book that can be finished in a short amount of time but the scenes in the book might last forever in your head. From the book, I've learnt a lot about the world of casinos and card counting, the job of the spotters, who cover as many tables as possible and keep running card-counts at their location and help the big player to count cards and the usage of hand signals. For example, a spotter would signal the count of +11 by saying “I wonder if there is a football game today.” (in reference of there are eleven players on a football team). Or he might say “I really suck at bowling” to indicate the count of +10 because in bowling, strike is ten pins. There are also lot’s of other techniques that the team invented. They had their own system. They also learned about the dark side of the casino world, how greedy people are and how the Vegas corporations works. Furthermore, Mezrich always leaves suspense to the readers and stimulate readers’ desire to read more about the story. At the end of all the chapters, you won’t know what’s coming up next. Mezrich is capable of keeping the readers’ eyes glues to the pages. In the book, the MIT team strapped thousands of dollars to their bodies to get the cash onto planes. They used false names, always have limos waiting for them at the airports, always having personal host to escort them everywhere. Reading about their incredibly rich life and their dangerous situation of being caught by the casinos, you will never know what they are going to do next.Even though the book is a quick read, it interests a wide variety of people, from who wants to feel the thrills and adventure the gambling world to the ones that never gambled before but curious about it. However, the book doesn't related to any big history themes. From the book, it seems like over the course of a few years, gambling is all they do. I couldn't tell how was it like in the 1990s except for the casinos. The author also has too much detail about the card counting techniques and it got repetitive to create the tension between characters and a card counter’s life. It seems like readers can just skim through some parts that is obviously meant to stretch out the book. Moreover, there are lots of details in the book doesn't seem real. Some of the events doesn't make any sense. For example, why would they hide their cash in all kinds of ways and trying to get through the airport security when they can just use a bank box or a debit card. Moreover, the team always stays at fancy hotels with suites, champagne, limos waiting on arrival, 24-hour open swimming pool just for them. Doesn't it seems too conspicuous to the casinos? Since they wants to keep it low, they shouldn't take risks like that. Also, according to Wikipedia, some of the exciting events didn't not occur. All these over dramatic scenes seems too unrealistic. However, they can really interest the readers. After all, this is one of the cheapest Vegas fantasy people can buy.Overall, this book contains interesting and exciting stories that keep the readers eyes on the pages. The plot goes quick enough that you won’t find it long or boring. Yet, it’s not the best book to read if you are looking for a historically informative book.

I'm a huge math geek myself, so I really wanted to read this story and learn how these guys did what they did. The story definitely held my attention from start to finish, but it wasn't emotionally gripping. It's written with a fair amount of flowery language (more than necessary, I'd say), but lacks a human element. I never felt like I *knew* any of the characters or really cared about them, but from a purely informational standpoint, yes, it's all there: what they did, how they did it, how and when it all happened. Personally, I think the author could have done a lot more with it, and really brought the reader into the story, let him *feel* the tension, the nerves, the thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat, but if you just want to know the facts and events of what happened, this book will work for you.

Entertaining read, but right off the bat it reads like a work of “non”non-fiction. The author takes a lot of liberty with describing scenes vividly when he was never present to witness them. Some authors will judiciously generate a quick scene to get a point across (e.g. Michael Lewis - “The Big Short”), but this book at large stretches reads like a complete work of fiction. The subject was really cool, and the fact that it really did happen makes for a fun read. However, it’s better characterized as historical fiction than non-fiction; google it.

The fifth installation delivers. I've reviewed every entry into this series, and Kloos gets better at every milepost. This series ihas been largely plot driven, and feels fresh for a pew-pew military SF series. In this entry, Kloos shows his character chops as for the first time time I'm flipping through pages sweating about who is going to make it.Fields of Fire is the campaign to retake Mars, and I would have been happy with a routine "turning of the tide" novel, which I fully expected. But he even manages to shake that up a bit and take it in a direction I didn't expect. Well played. When I reviewed "Terms of Enlistment" I advised that you should scoop it up before he wasn't selling novels at Indy prices any more. Here's my advice now - scoop up the series before his numbers dictate new novels at 15 bucks.

This is book 5 of the "Frontlines" series, and it is even better than the excellent Book 4. There is much to like here. Firstly, as I have said in other reviews, the aliens in this novel are truly alien, nothing like humans. This is good. We humans have never met aliens and we know nothing about what they might be like. In this series, the aliens are truly alien and appear to treat humans with disdain; regarding us more or less as pests for them to eradicate, unworthy of compassion or any more regard that we humans give to ants. The characterizations in this novel continue to develop as well. Kloos creates characters that the reader will care about and like. The action in this novel is very good. Too many space opera novels rapidly turn action scenes into nothing but technobabble, which is essentially a cop-out substitute for an actual plot. You won't find that here. The action is integral to the plot, largely eschews technobabble, and held my interest throughout (not always easy). This one is worthy of a five-star rating for the space opera genre. RJB.

Kloos' Frontlines series is just top notch Sci-Fi and this latest relies is no exception. The tone and story arc is in the spirit of the greats: think Halo: CE, Aliens, and even a bit of Starship Troopers. However, the work is not derivative. Kloos has created an entire universe here from scratch, one where I enjoy spending time. I don't give out five stars lightly, but this series is as close to perfection as anything I have read, watched, or played. It is fiction at its best. Do yourself a favor and pick up the entire series at once; it will save you several more runs to the store or shipping charges.

The Skinny: events take place a little over a month after the 4th novel. Earth's forces are gearing up for a major offensive against the Lankies controlling Mars. The fate of Earth depends upon success. The problem, the once seemingly dumb Lankies are now acting very tactical. The Good: Kloos keeps the pace of the story cranking. It's an action story. He delivers, and even does so with some even writing. The Bad: Throughout four books I've been thinking "this is a spacefaring race, yes they are 'alien', but they act without strategy and tactics". Finally, the question is being answered, but a bit too slowly. The action is good, but the story doesn't so much go forward as it meets a stalemate. Book 6 needs to provide more answers. Book 4 started some character development, but book 5 lacks. The Ugly: Lots of "F" bombs.Thoughts: This is an easy to read series; however, I never got excited about this volume. Usually, I tear threw these in less than a week, this one didn't inspire me to turn pages. Kloos needs to develop his Bad Guy Aliens beyond that. Now, they are the easy to hate aliens. He toys, a little bit, with his characters seeing them as less alien, and more human, but not enough.I'm ready for Lt Grayson to develop beyond just a good soldier.

I thought quite highly of Marko Kloos "Frontlines" series, calling it the best of ground-based mil sci-fi. Somehow, the fifth book in the series raised the bar even further!. It's Earth against the Lankies in Greenland and on Mars, so for setting alone it is worth reading. But it is not a homogenous "Terran" force but one made up of Americans like Lt. Grayson and his wife Halley and also Russians and a variety of Europeans; Chinese are fighting the Lankies, too, but out of our sight. Their equipment is advanced but understandable, and Mr. Kloos stays very true to the limitations of the soldiers' arms and armor. The gigantic Lankies are some of the best and most "alien" foes in the genre. We never truly understand them, though the range of their capabilities become a bit more evident in this book. They have taken Mars, trapping our settlers in a number of large bunkers while the Lanky version of terraforming is done. Clearly, a Lanky presence there cannot be allowed to remain, so the stakes are never in doubt. The drop ships and SI troopers are needed, but the task is one that may be too much. Finally, the writing is first rate and some of it, particularly at home in Liberty Falls, rises above the genre. A pleasure to read!
