This is book is very much a memoir, and reads like a detailed stream of consciousness of one doctor who treated many suffering HIV patients in a well known former HIV hospital New York, and then later grew disenchanted treating more minor problems in an outpatient clinic and travels to Botswana when treatments for HIV became available in Botswana. The day to day work in hospitals in Botswana is really descriptive and gives you an idea of what Botswana is like without painting an overly rosy picture.Perhaps similar to people working in hospice and palliative care, the author discovers that witnessing the deaths of a large number of patients actually sensitizes him to the suffering of others, and in the end makes his work in an outpatient clinic more satisfying. Working in Botswana from 2002 to 2008, and then returning for two years in 2013, it is interesting to see how things have, or haven't, changed in Botswana and to read a little bit about other interesting patients and colleagues that the author runs into.The author isn't an expert on the epidemiology of HIV, but does spill some ink describing the roots causes behind the high prevalence of HIV in Botswana, which probably does justice to the Botswana people who are confronting a crisis well-beyond the scale of anything seen in most western countries in terms of huge effects on society at large.The ambivalence that the author regarding his work in the US, the shortfalls in Botswana, and just dealing with greatly suffering patients in general more or less comes to a satisfying conclusion at the end of the book. Although the author takes a more philosophical perspective by saying that he didn't "save" anybody in Botswana, only that treating patient extended their life span so that they can "save" themselves, it would have been interesting to know what he thinks about optimizing HIV care, and general medical care, in Botswana and what sorts of behavior change techniques could be used with patients and general community members to curb the trajectory of the HIV epidemic there.

I have recently been thinking a lot about how we don’t really talk about HIV and AIDS that much anymore. As a kid born in the late 70’s I remember the dark days of the 80’s when people were dying in numbers from the disease and we assumed it would become a Black Death type plague, the early 90’s when our beloved Freddie Mercury died, his illness a secret until his death. And then the ARV medication cocktails started to work, and people stopped dying... The billboards disappeared and we started to worry more about HPV-related cancers, Ebola, Zika, and the re-emergence of certain vaccine-preventable viruses like measles.Remember when reports told us that AIDS would wipe out Africa? Was it all scaremongering, or was it really on the brink of a continent wide pandemic? I certainly never really took too much time to do more than some topical research on the subject, just assumed that we had managed to solve the crisis with the drugs that had become the norm in the US. As I have been digging a little deeper into the subject recently, One Life At A Time by Daniel Baxter popped on my radar, and I feel it provides a very enlightening narrative into a small part of Africa and the AIDS epidemic, through Baxter’s personal experience in Botswana.Baxter worked as an AIDS doctor in NYC during the worst US era of the illness, the 80’s, and left for Botswana on a slight whim in 2002, excited to bring his expertise and care to the Batswana, where at the time a big portion of the population was assumed to be infected with the virus (24%). Through his two stays in Botswana (6 years and then 2 years with a 4 year hiatus between) Baxter recounts how he arrived in Botswana assuming certain things and instead learnt many lessons, some heartbreaking, some embarrassing, and some just really important along the way.Africa is a continent, a huge continent, comprised of many countries, and this memoir only describes the AIDS situation in Botswana from the early 2000’s onwards, so while other countries similar in population and government might have had the same processes in place I think it’s important to have a distinct view of all, just as we would when talking about different European countries. More importantly we should draw a comparison with other countries where the attitudes towards prevention and care have been different, or were different at the time (South Africa for example), to see how important the collaboration between the Botswana government, population and outside agencies was/is.There are times during his first stay in Botswana (6 years) when I felt that the narrative gets a little jumbled up, Baxter’s memories and facts all colliding together, and I found it hard to fasten myself to a timeline or even a character or edifice that I would reencounter again down the road. This isn’t a bad thing, just that sometimes the stories were combined in a way that makes it a little hard to get through, because you have to go back a few lines or pages and read them over again. The second part of the book, when Baxter goes back to Botswana for another stint after 4 years in NYC, is less haphazard, written with more focus, and a lot easier to follow in general.All in all I thought One Life At A Time was a great story of how an American doctor lands in a country he does not know at all, and learns so much more than he ever imagined he would. While Baxter brings his expertise to help the people of Botswana combat the epidemic of AIDS in the country, he receives so much more in return, including a lot of humility and a much wider view of the world. I feel like I learned so much more about Botswana than I ever knew before, and am now interested in learning much, much more. Last of all, I think it’s very important to mention that Baxter never portrays himself as a savior - he just continued to do the work he had been doing in the 80’s and 90’s in NYC in Botswana, and is very vocal about how much he learned about himself when he was there. One Life At A Time is a brilliant insight into the AIDS epidemic in general, how hard work and collaboration (we can include Dubya -in this part too - PEPFAR helped make a huge difference in how HIV positive patients in Africa received care), can turn despair into hope. I’m looking forward to reading Baxter’s other books now too.

A worthy read about a slice of the world we don't read much about and a disease that's slipped down in the news media. Baxter had been an infectious disease specialist for years when he decided to go to Botswana. Seemed like a good decision but then he discovered (and it should not have been the surprise it was) that practicing medicine and dealing with AIDS is far different in Africa than it is in the US. His second tour seems more successful but he's still overwhelmed. There's a certain amount of first world-third world conflict (naturally) but it's the patients who will stay with you. Growing up with Mister Rogers always playing in the background I always found myself intrigued by his message. I started watching as a child, at breakfast before catching the bus in my middle school years, and his show became a part of my daily lessons while I was home schooled 8-11th grade my morning agenda would be to do a synopsis on his daily report. While reading this book the feelings of nostalgia rushed back and it made me think of all the wonderful teachings I would love to have for my son who is now 3. I picked up this book and I couldn't put it down. It only took me about 45 minutes to make it through and I probably would have made it through sooner if I wasn't busy bookmarking my favorite pages. For all adults who want to be hit with "the feels" or for young adults who simply want something to read with a cup of tea or coffee, this is the book. I waited years before I finally bought the series and I can say it is something I will read over and over - after a rough day or after an amazing day. It gives you all of the feelings of what a wonderful life it can be. With that being said I will leave you with my favorite message from this book.“Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.”- Fred Rogers

As the host of the longest running PBS show in history, Fred Rogers inspired entire generations of viewers with messages of love and wisdom. He didn’t have one mean bone in his body. He wasn’t judgmental. He knew that every child had importance, every child had potential, and every child was deserving of love. Love didn’t always mean being one hundred percent agreeable all the time, but it was always an unconditional feeling that every person should experience in their lifetime. Fred Rogers passed away the year this book was published, but his legacy of love is immortal and multi-generational even to this day.One of the most important messages you can receive from this book is to know that your emotions are completely natural and shouldn’t be feared or balked at. If someone wants to smile, let them smile. If someone wants to cry, let them cry. If someone is angry, help them use their anger in a constructive way. Reading these quotes has helped me lower my defenses somewhat, but it’s a process that takes time as Fred Rogers will be the first to tell you. I’ll also admit that I hate watching other people cry because it makes me vicariously sad as well. That’s not from a place of discomfort. It’s from a place of love. Love is one of Mister Rogers’s most important themes.Another important thing to remember is the effect we have on other people. Whether you do a big or small favor for someone, the feeling of gratitude is a powerful thing that will make it all worthwhile. By the same token, every hurtful thing we do to another person will be remembered as well. Be careful with your words and actions. Be a positive influence on a child’s life. We take all of these experiences when we grow up and they help us develop our adult personalities, for better or worse. Everything you do matters more than you think. It may not seem like a big deal, but to another human being, it means the world. Don’t be hateful. Don’t be bitter. Be the best possible example of yourself you can be.And finally, another favorite part of this book is the fable Mister Rogers tells of the carpenter who refused to hire an apprentice because he won’t admit to making mistakes and therefore won’t know how to fix them when he does. Making mistakes is a natural part of the human experience, no matter how good of a person you may be. Even Mister Rogers made mistakes in his life that he ended up turning into valuable life lessons. Strength doesn’t come from perfect muscles or superhero abilities. It comes from being able to admit your weaknesses and working to make them into strengths. Egomania never did the world any good.Everything you read in this book may seem like practical commonsense, but the truth is, these things don’t get said enough. Too many times we’ve strayed from our happiness and used our negativity to do awful things to each other. It could be a microcosmic relationship between two people or a macrocosmic political blunder heard around the world. We need Mister Rogers’s wisdom now more than ever. If everybody would pick up a copy of this book and study it until the end of time, we’d be much better off as a human race. An extra credit grade will go to this beautifully-crafted piece of nonfiction.

I share this book with all my friends now for whatever life throws at them.Including me throwing this book directly at them.

Like all of life's important coping skills, the ability to forgive and the capacity to let go of resentments most likely take root very early in our lives."

Mrs.Rogers' introduction shows us the kind of strong, moral, yet forgiving and gentle man who Mr. Rogers was. Each brings an independent insight which is helpful and never hurtful. As a father figure, we see a great one on each page, reassuring the children who looked to him for comfort and education, which is delivered so nicely in this lovely hardcover book...built to be read and re-read. Like comfort food for the Mind and Heart! AND, not so bad for adults who miss or never really had such a great Father Figure in real life.

Get this book for your coffee table. It will make you, your family, your guests feel better for having picked it up, and as it's read just page by page with long quotes and excerpts, it's the perfect coffee table piece.I think Mr. Rogers was one of the best men who ever lived. I watch reruns with my daughter (free if you have Prime!) and it makes both of us better people.

I didn't get this book until my fifth month of pregnancy when I was searching for something to help relieve my back pain. I came across this book and after a single weekend of doing the introductory BAKS exercises, I'm feeling noticably better. I wish I had followed this program during my first pregnancy, b/c it teaches you to visualize the act of giving birth (like squeezing toothpaste from a tube), teaches you which muscles to use, and gives you the safe and effective exercises that develop those muscles. At the rist of TMI, I noticed the difference with my first bowel movement! I'm actually starting to look FORWARD to having a baby because I feel like I'm going to be prepared. I know HOW to push and I'm excited about developing my strength over the next few months so that labor isn't as exhausting as it was the first time around. I plan to write another review in December after the baby is born.

My yoga instructor recommended this book. I had a rough pregnancy with my first child. This pregnancy has been a breeze because I'm much stronger thanks to the workouts in this book.

I didn't do all of the exercises listed (didn't have enough time in my day!) but there were several that I did do regularly, and I feel that they really did help with my pregnancy and labor. The general theory behind the exercises was really excellent for me to keep in mind, as well. I didn't buy any of the other things that this author created, but this book alone was helpful for me as a first-time pregnant lady.

I started reading Julie Tupler's book at the end of my 2nd trimester and started with her BAKS Basics workout for a week or so while on business travel. I can't say my back pain went away but it certainly helped.I've also been doing her maternal fitness workout (takes longer - about an hour +) and it's a tough workout that you can do at your own pace - with just a few things, at home. (Need some light weights and a resistance band).I love that she offers pages you can photocopy to have on hand with you - makes it easy to follow once you know the routine or if you have to travel like me.

This has so many wonderful exercises in it to do while you're pregnant and post pregnant. Very helpful!

The breathing techniques in this book helped me through 10 hours of labor. I cannot say that I was very calm but the exercises mentioned do strengthen you mentally & physically. Makes you feel like you can handle labor without any worry.Loved it & even shared the book with a friend so she can benefit from the wonderful techniques described in the book.

I used this during my first pregnancy and truly believe it helped me to be relaxed and well prepared for the delivery which ended up being a short labor and 20 minutes pushing. Now I wanted to do the same exercises again in my second pregnancy but couldn't find my book. I just ordered a used version so I don't miss out! I also think the exercises helped me get back in shape quickly after having the baby since my bellymuscles were nicely toned underneath!

This book has some really good information and wonderful tips for preparing for the marathon of labor and delivery. Once you learn the basic moves they can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. I have not been able to make myself do it every day but I can see how important it is. My lack of motivation is certainly not the book's fault! Now if I can just get off the couch...
