An interesting reference book, "Collectors Encyclopedia of California Pottery" details the once thriving industry of artisanal ceramics in California, and will no doubt induce readers to closely examine those old curios in the their grandparents' homes!Complete with excerpts on numerous manufacturers, as well as clear pictures and valuations of many of their wares, this book is a valuable resource for the aspiring collector. Examples of fine art, functional housewares and the decidedly kitsch abound - from the early days of the turn of the twentieth century, when new kilns were sprouting up all throughout California, to the decline in locally handcrafted pottery in the latter half of that century. Written in 2005, the valuations may be of limited use, however, as a tool for identification and distinguishing between the authentic and the imitations, this book is certainly useful.

This book covers some the potteries that the author considers the most important companies in 20th century California ceramics. I disagree with many of his choices, especially with the large number of figurines covered. Interestingly, I've found some wonderful vases, trays, pots and bottles from those companies known only for their figurines. Who would have thought they even existed? Nonetheless, this book is a necessary reference for understanding the themes that run through California pottery.It is easy to read, fully illustrated with excellent photographs. Even though it doesn't apply as much to my personal interests, I still refer to it frequently.

As a fourth generation Californian and a long time American art pottery collector I was pleased and delighted at the extraordinary number of potteries in California. This book provided a great overview and history of California's many potteries with histories and tales of the people involved. Much of these potteries are found in Southern California with little note of the potteries of Northern California, although many were lost in the 1906 earthquake the work done was worthy of mention. The book stimulated me to start getting some California art pottery for myself, especially the Catalina pottery. A great book to add to my collection on American art pottery.

I came to find this book on Amazon because I've been away from the Asian supermarkets and restaurants sprinkled all over L.A.. To my delight, most of my favorite Thai dishes are present in this cookbook (all except for Lard Na [sometimes called, "Lad Na"]). Added to the bonus of having great tasting Thai flavors from the comfort and convenience of my own house, I am now in control of what I do and do not put in my favorite dishes, thanks to this book of recipes. In other words, now that I have wonderful master recipes to start from/work with, I can adjust to suit my specific tastes and needs.What's more, I love to cook--but I am not a seasoned pro, by any means--and I can have an all-in-one dish in about 30 minutes (from preparation to finish product)--provided I start steaming rice right before making the dish/meal. The bulk of the work, for each savory dish, lies in the prep work of washing and cutting the meats and vegetables. The desserts are a bit more labor intensive; but the (main) dishes stir-fry in an absolute flash.Truthfully, because I can adjust for my exact tastes and preferences, I find that I like what I have prepared more than that of my favorite Thai restaurant back home. Also, in decreasing the amounts of called for sugar and salty sauce (e.g. soy or fish sauce), a recipe may call for, I find that the quality and flavor of the dish is not at all compromised and is still very authentic in flavor.Young's _Simply Thai Cooking_ is a wonderfully easy book to follow and cook from. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys authentic tasting Thai food, regardless of his/her cooking abilities.

I have made two recipes from this book do far and they have both been fabulous! The instructions are clear and easy to follow. Definitely a good buy!

Good recipes, not so hard, ingredients need to be purchased to make it taste authentic, lucky for me I have an Asian market in Aurora, CO that is great. Lek's Asian Market, they have it all and so it makes cooking with this books easier. I wish it had drunken noodles in it but overall it is a good book.

I had an older issue of this book and actually ordered it for a friend because I loved it so much. Upon leafing through the book, I discovered many additional recipes so kept it for myself and ordered three more for friends. If you love good Thai food, you'll love this book.

I have really enjoyed some of these recipes. They exceeded my expectations.

very good reference for animal rights/welfare

This book was a required text for one of my political science courses. I thought the author discussed some thoughtful arguments on the topic of animal rights and citizenship. Though I do no agree with the author completely, this is a good text to review and it gave me some new perspectives on the treatment of animals, especially domesticated animals.

This book is an astounding new perspective on animal rights. It explains in clear, concise language why animals deserve not only negative rights (e.g. being free from harm and exploitation) but also positive rights (e.g. basic statuses of citizenship for domesticated animals). While not entirely convinced of their arguments regarding wild and liminal animals, this book genuinely changed my perspective on the status of domesticated animals and how we ought to treat them in a way that hasn't happened since I read Animal Liberation. This book is good for the quiet it's-my-choice vegan and the outspoken abolitionist alike. Highly recommended.

This book makes a unique and needed contribution to the animal rights movement. I found it extremely well thought out in terms of providing a roadmap and vision of a world where we humans incorporate other animals into our political sphere of concern in sharing the earth together. It is well worth reading.
