In terms of maps, this entry in the Penguin Historical Atlas series is superb--full-color maps from Ancient Times to the Present. The historical blurbs that go with it are also excellent, if short (but the focus, of course, is on the maps). One thing, however, is an over-reliance on the Bible as History--which is fine if you're devout or a true believer, but annoying if you'd prefer a more factual basis. That is, the authors have several maps that assume the Bible stories of Abraham, Moses and the Patriarchs are true as written in the Bible. All fine and good, as said, if you're a true believer. But where is the archaeological and non-Biblical written evidence to support those maps? The volume should have at the least included maps based on current findings on the latter evidence, in addition to the Biblical evidence. Also, more detailed maps on the ebb and flow of events in other Biblical lands, such as Sumer, Assyria, Akkad, Babylonia (the Amorite, Kassite and Chaldean versions), the Phoenicians, Hittites, the various states of Syria (Ebla, Yamhad, Alalakh, Mari, the Aramaeans, etc.), not to mention Canaan itself (where are the Philistines? Moab? Edom? the Sea People settlements (other than the Philistines), the on-again, off-again control by Egypt) would have made this a truly superb entry in this series. Alas, these are lacking, and ultimately so is this volume.

I beg to differ.For your convenience, here's a brief breakdown by chapter titles:1. Turning Problems into Code (brief intro, no exercises)2. Input, Processing, and Output (6 exercises)3. Calculations (7 exercises)4. Making Decisions (mostly about control statements, 10 exercises)5. Functions (4 exercises)6. Repetition (loops, 5 exercises)7. Data Structures (arrays/lists/maps, 8 exercises)8. Working with Files (file i/o, 6 exercises)9. Working with External Services (interacting with web services, 6 exercises)10. Full Programs (5 exercises)The vast majority of the exercises here are dedicated to topics that should be covered by any "introduction to programming" class or free online language tutorials. The exercises ramp up on difficulty at an absurdly slow pace - for example, the classic "Guess the Number" game doesn't make an appearance until more than halfway through the book. And in the spirits of "practice makes permanent", the book devotes TEN exercises on just writing if-else statements. Seriously?!Even the later exercises lack variety. Most of the exercises in the "Full Programs" chapter are simple applications that deal with some external data store. Instead of a taking a broad look at all the various problems that can be solved through programming, the book just stays within a very limited comfort zone.Plenty of topics were omitted in this book, but really should have been included. In fact, these topics are what truly demonstrates the differences between programming languages and their design philosophies. For example:- Inheritance vs composition (ex: Java and Python are both OO languages but handle this completely differently)- Multi-threading and concurrence (ex: Ruby and Go have very elegant syntax for this)- Common design patterns (ex: implement a singleton in the language of your choice)- Interprocess Communication (ex: pipes in C/C++)- More advanced algorithms and data structures (ex: implement BFS or DFS) ...and the list goes on.In short, only get this book if you are just learning to write code, or have been out of practice for too long and need a refresher. Experienced engineers looking for a challenge should look elsewhere.

I read the reviews and was cautioned how basic the exercises were for those with programming experience. I do have a few years of experience but that was 20 years ago and wanted a book that had practical programming challenges to get me thinking like a programmer once again. The sample book stopped short of showing actual exercises, and if it did, I would not have wasted my money. However, I was intrigued enough by the table of contents to buy it. This is not a horrible a book for absolute or novice programmers, probably would be great for them, but certainly anyone that has taken one programming class or a year or two of experience would be better off purchasing something else. It's a 1-star for the experienced programmer but say a 4-star for a beginner.

I am a beginner student with software development and have decided to focus on python and just constant repetition. I am still learning and this book has really pushed me to just get in the habitat of practice and the "just do it" attitude. I find helpful but only have been through the first couple of chapters. think its a good book for testing yourself

I have read over the book. Overall, this book is not what I look for. The excercises in the book is outdated, bored, simple,... anyway. I wish I didn't buy it.

This is a great book to get you thinking about how to solve problems like a programmer and for learning the nuances of the language you're working in. I am a seasoned iOS programmer and I purchased this book to use as a supplement to reading the Apple materials on Swift. Using this book with Swift is semi-challenging and it forces you to think very definitely than you would programming with Obj-C.I recommend this book. It's pricey for what it is length-wise but still worth it.

This is a set of tasks to create small to medium size programs, that aims at providing programmers with problems to practice their skills. The book is divided in several topics, and begins with very easy problems which get progressively harder. Each task has several additional challenges, to make the problem more complicated. The main focus is to master the reader's chosen programming language/API. And as such the target audience of the book is people with basic to intermediate knowledge in the language they use with this book, because they need to delve deeply into the language manual/specification.

Did many of these things in a course in high school. Its a great refresher and reminder of the different commands I used, and didn't use. Great example problems that test your skills!

I find this to be one of the most difficult control theory books to use to learn control theory. The strength of this book is that there are many solved problems which can be used to test your understanding of the material in other control theory books, which do not provide answers to the end of chapter problems.

I like Schaum's outline books because they are concise and short and cover all the necessary parts you need to know about the subject. I have already read a few of them and enjoyed a lot. You can quickly and painlessly learn the main concept and practice with several solved questions. The main reason I bought this book was my lab members. They are students on computer science department and they do not know much about control systmes. Other books make it hard for them to start reading and understanding the topics, because they assume some backgrounds. This one is easy to read and follow and you can master the important things quickly without getting invlolved in unneccessary details.

This book is an improvement over the previous edition because analog and digital systems are covered at the same time. There are tried and true methods, like bode plots for simplicity, but you'll find the Nyquist and root locus coverage complete too. The price is a bargain.

This book was a great resource when I took my Modern Control Systems course.

This book was paradigm shifting for me. Even though I had often observed that the Bible uses "sanctified" in the past tense I did not know that this is the way it is used the majority of the time in the Bible. Our sanctification is so much more than just our maturation in Christ--there is a huge part of it that has already been accomplished for us at the cross--it is what makes us holy and able to be called "saints." This reality of our new identity in Christ then provides the motivation for holy living, which is also a crucial part of sanctification. This book is a clear call for us to start learning and speaking about sanctification in the way that the Bible actually uses the word--if any of this interests you, this book is a must read!

I am involved in a discipleship youth group and the idea of studying Sanctification was brought up as something we should study/teach for the summer instead of starting an other book of the bible. So, all the leaders and some of the youth bought this book thinking it was going to be just a "good book to read" to get an understanding of sanctification, but it has turned out to be a huge eye opener, to see the connections between old testament teachings and promises and the finished work of Christ in the new testament, and how we are to live/conduct ourselves in/through Christ's once for all atonement for sin, and how we are given a right standing before a Holy and Amazing God despite our sinful nature.Possessed by God has loads of references to all sorts of Bible passages (and they are not taken out of context).I highly recommend this to everyone, it is a very deep book and will take you along time to get through but is so worth the time and effort.If you are someone who just likes reading books by Christian authors and you don't spend much time in the Bible this book will force you to read the bible and study it.

This book is an excellent treatment of the New Testament material on sanctification and I used it as one of the texts for a unit I taught at Booth College on "The Doctrine of Sanctification: Biblical Perspectives." However, I do feel quite ambivalent about its use in that context. While it deals admirably with all of the key texts on sanctification, providing good exegetical studies along the way, it is marred by an apparent need to criticise (and often unfairly) those in the Wesleyan theological tradition. The author will often portray Wesleyans as holding to sinless perfectionism overlooking the nuances of perfectionist teaching within the tradition. Ironically his own findings in discussing certain passages are sometimes fully in line with Wesleyan views. The book is also a critique of the author's own Reformed tradition, at least its Puritan heritage which has placed great stress on holiness as a mark of the elect. The characteristic Puritan stress on "progressive sanctification" (mortification and vivification) the author sees as unhelpful because it places, he says, an unhelpful burden on believers and obscures the completed work of Christ in their lives. Since the New Testament is primarily concerned with the positional holiness of believers we should place the stress on the instantaneousness of sanctification not its progressive features. Christ's death secures believers as the holy ones of God, set apart as belonging to him. That is a completed action that cannot be taken away from or added to. That is all good so far as it goes but Peterson does not do justice to the frequently found imperatives within the New Testament to "perfect holiness in the fear of God," to "live a life worthy of the calling you have received," etc. Believers are "saints" yes, but saints "called to be holy." Holiness in the New Testament must be understood as holding the positional and the experiential together. This was something Calvin certainly understood and it is a pity that this particular Reformed theologian seems to have departed from that emphasis here. I wish there were a book that did as good a job as this at interpreting the New Testament material on sanctification without the need to engage in an unnecessary and often unfounded polemic against Wesleyan theology.
