In terms of maps, this entry in the Penguin Historical Atlas series is superb--full-color maps from Ancient Times to the Present. The historical blurbs that go with it are also excellent, if short (but the focus, of course, is on the maps). One thing, however, is an over-reliance on the Bible as History--which is fine if you're devout or a true believer, but annoying if you'd prefer a more factual basis. That is, the authors have several maps that assume the Bible stories of Abraham, Moses and the Patriarchs are true as written in the Bible. All fine and good, as said, if you're a true believer. But where is the archaeological and non-Biblical written evidence to support those maps? The volume should have at the least included maps based on current findings on the latter evidence, in addition to the Biblical evidence. Also, more detailed maps on the ebb and flow of events in other Biblical lands, such as Sumer, Assyria, Akkad, Babylonia (the Amorite, Kassite and Chaldean versions), the Phoenicians, Hittites, the various states of Syria (Ebla, Yamhad, Alalakh, Mari, the Aramaeans, etc.), not to mention Canaan itself (where are the Philistines? Moab? Edom? the Sea People settlements (other than the Philistines), the on-again, off-again control by Egypt) would have made this a truly superb entry in this series. Alas, these are lacking, and ultimately so is this volume.
