Steve is a gorilla who lives in a zoo in Rio. Steve and his caretaker, Antonio, love jazz music. They listened to it together. One night Antonio becomes lonely and leaves the zoo in search of Antonio. He finds a yellow hat that he uses as a disguise. Although the city is full of people playing all sorts of music and celebrating, Steve is drawn through the city by the sounds coming from a particular building. It is the sound of jazz and Steve enters in. He’s in for a treat that night! The illustrations in the book are very colorful and children probably will enjoy Steve’s journey through the city. With that said, I’m not sure how many will understand Carnival in Rio and why Steve is able to make it so far without anyone becoming suspicious. It would be good to pair this book with listening to a recording of some actual jazz music.
