I would guess that anyone who has been in combat knows that there are some things that are best left in the past, to live only in our memories (hopefully, infrequently) until we also die. War is hell and many of those who have been there have horrible visions of hell etched deep in their soul. These visons comeback to them in a sound, a smell, a face, and even in their dreams, maybe most often in their dreams. Those who have not been "there" will never understand or even envision what some warriors carry, though they may sympathize. This book makes an effort to tell some of what these veterans of America's wars carry in the deep recesses of their mind. As you read this book know that this is just the tip of the iceberg, because these are the things that are said. There are plenty that "they cannot say."
This is such a great book from the perspective of telling the stories of veterans who've served in our various wars. Having served multiple tours in Iraq myself, I completely relate to the experiences being described by the various veterans. These are stories that need to be told and should be read by many more people. The general American population has become so separated from those who served in the military. Less than 2% of the population has served in the military which means the vast majority of Americans have no idea what it's like to serve in the military or in a war. They are so far removed from the trials and tribulations of what us veterans went and go through to ensure they themselves have the freedom to complain about everything under the sun.It's also a crime how our government continues to fail us veterans. We fought the wars they sent us to fight and did so willingly. The government and the American people have a moral obligation to support and care for the warriors they send to fight our nation's wars. Individuals may not agree with the wars, but that does not absolve them from their obligation to support and care for the warriors that were willing to do what they were either unwilling to do, or unable to do for their country.My only gripe with the book is as a reporter, the author always felt, even during the war the right to publish and expose the wrongs or ills that were happening even when the author knew in doing so, he would be complicit in the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of US Soldiers. There are always going to be wrongs committed during a war, we have an internal process for exposing them to leadership and having the individuals held responsible. But publishing them to the public, only provides fuel for the enemy to continue the war. For example, the insurgency in Iraq really spread out of control when the media went crazy over the Abu Graihb detainee abuse committed by a small faction of rogue military police. That could have been handled internally and the enemy would never have known about it. Instead, the media promoted it for months on end and it drew tens of thousands of foreign fighters to Iraq to fight Americans who they believed were committing war crimes against their fellow Muslims. Tens of thousands of US Soldiers were maimed and killed because of that single new source.
Why do we continue to do this to our young men? They are meant to big a large part of our country’s future and are totally naive to world events, feel that they are invincible and seldom have faced another person’s death in their lives. And we send them back home with battle fatigue/shell shocked/PTSD depending on the war they had to face.Having been classified as 1A at the height of the Viet Nam War I was, obviously, called up to attend a full day of physical and mental exams conducted by the US Army. Out of the 500 potential draftees only a few did not meet the expected goals and were excused from the draft process. I, fortunately, was detected as having a heart murmur and, although concerned about my future health, left the armoury with a slight spring in my step. If this were not so I, too, may have been one of the interviewed ex-soldiers that made up the bulk of this text or, more realistically, would have come home encased in black plastic. Later on in my life I actively sought out the male friends with whom I graduated from high school with. The differences in my contacts with persons who did and those who did not serve in Nam were dramatic. Those who did not were the same persons I attended classes with while those who did were highly stilted, opinionated and emotionally flat. They, like those interviewed, had lost their souls to the US Army, something that they never can retrieve.......
