Urban Fantasy - Werewolves, Mermaids/Mermen, Selkies - M/M romanceDelightful comic short story. Gail Carriger's recent re-releases of earlier short stories are such treats! She does an excellent job developing the characters, story and plotlines in this format.Alec is a werewolf with problems. He's a mild-mannered marine biologist who enjoys reading literature. His father and brothers are beer guzzling, rowdy, manly werewolves. Alec tries to fit in as best he can, but it's not easy. And he's gay and in the closet.A pack meeting is held, and Alec, as a marine biologist, is matched up with a mermaid and merman to investigate an Irish Mafia scheme involving selkies. Alec and Marvin, the merman, are drawn to each other -- but Alec is in the closet, and his family (and the ghost who haunts the family home) seems to be everywhere. How much did I like this short story and Fairy Debt (another 5 star Gail Carriger short story)? Enough to REALLY want a full length book, or better yet, a series. In the case of Marine Biology, Gail's fans are getting their wish. From Gail's blog, this will be a spin off of this intriguing short story!Secret Project SAS ~ Novella? Novel? Who knows.Status: Rough draft.Something utterly new and different for Gail. Hella raunchy. Super dirty. Very very fun. Spin off of Marine Biology.
Bought these because I like Gail and think she’s a good writer who writes fun popcorn that is well written and plotted. I don’t DO werewolf, male gay hord core porn romance. It’s just doesn’t do anything for me.And yet, I bought the books on strength of her reputation and my experience and read all three. They are eminently readable, even for somebody totally uninterested in men having sex with men. There’s a plot and a story line and the sex can be skipped over without losing the thread. I gave them away once done to somebody who will like and read and re-read.For anybody who likes the subject matter. They are good.
I have never read anything by this author and had no preconceived notions about how this author would write like.I loved it! Humorous, witty, and generally good fluff. It was a quick read and it left me wanting me a bit more in the way of story resolution. I was left with a bit of questions that I felt could have been answered but it is a prequel, so knowing that I was prepared for a!l of that. It left me wanting a bit more, but in a good way.Pros:Quick, fluffy fun readWell-writtenWitty, sarcastic and enjoyable charactersNew takes on classic characters/ creaturesCons:Needed a little better resolution to the mysteryThe romance happened quickly, and less organically then I would have likedNeed. More. Sex. (I am just a little pervy)All in all, great read for a buck!
This story gives a set up to the series, which is done well enough considering the constraints of being a short story. It’s fast-paced because it’s so short, which isn’t a problem, there was ground to cover. It would’ve been nicer if Alec and Marvin were developed more. A little bit more about the world. The plot had a resolution-mostly.What was disappointing is that when the story finished it was “that’s it?†I was just getting invested into the story and expecting to see more of the payout, but it stops at 68%. Just stops. After that there is a sample of the next book and author note, etc. That kind of practice is a no-go for me.
It simply doesn't have the length to get into much *depth* with the relationships or even the action/ conflict, though there still mnanage to be some surprises. However, as you can tell by the fact that I happily reread it in anticipation of reading The Sumage Solution soon, it's definitely got the Carriger humor and likable characters — and even a bit of original creature concepts. Butch, red-meat-and-beer werewolves make sense, as do beautiful siren merfolk, but I've never seen a walrus selkie before. The ending is a HFN beginning, making me glad she's written more (and in full length) about the new pack in their new home in the Bay area.
Cute story that was short and sweet. I’m not a huge fan of the “insta-love†trope in romances, but you can hand-wave it away here as a werewolf mating thing. Getting some background into the characters that I adore in The Sumage Solution was nice, however. The plot aspect of this story felt a bit rushed, but that’s the curse of the short story. The resolution was unexpected and quite humorous.Carriger is definitely finding her stride with these characters and their voices here, but it’s still a fun read if you enjoy the main series.Â
Alec, a most unusual werewolf, finds himself as liaison to Marvin and Giselle, merpeople on the track of some illegal selkie activities. Alec's pack, unaware that he's gay, hope he'll hook up with Giselle, but it is Marvin, an old schoolmate, who catches his attention.A funny, delightful m/m romance between two supernatural species. The twist about Alec was a nice touch. Alec's family, both blood and pack, are typical werewolves, but his father needs some serious slap down. Loved this from start to finish. Plus, Fifi for a werewolf name? Oh, yeah! 4.5 out of 5.
2 1\2 stars.Cute Short story. It is an intro to a new series that as an interesting premise. I eagerly anticipate reading the upcoming story. The rating is not an indication of the author's skill at writing. It is because this was a "tease" for future books in the series and not a complete story in itself. I enjoyed this "set-up" for the new series. The author seems to be creating a fascinating world with unusual paranormal characters. I eagerly anticipate this series.
