Absolutely nothing new here in regards to insight as to what makes the man. "He's quiet and reserved, but a great guy once you get to know him". Got it. Didn't need a plethora of (mostly-wholly-unqualified) quotations and a couple hundred pages to tell us that. You will learn nothing in detail about how he spends his time outside of band activities, the "and other addictions" early-'00s period of time, or anything else that delves into the life of James Hetfield outside the Metallica frontman that hasn't been covered ad nauseam elsewhere over the decades. This is more of a quick background on Hetfield's youth, and then a history of the band as a whole. I gave it two stars, rather than just a single star, because it does provide a pretty comprehensive timeline of Metallica's history, to include shows, tours, studio time, album cycles, and other significant moments in the band's career. I'll give it that much. That's about it, though...
I've read quite a few books on Metallica over the years and found this to be the most lacking; especially with it being positioned as a biography of James Hetfield. Much of the information presented has been told in much more informative and detailed explanations by Joel McIver and Mick Wall. This volume should almost be considered the "starter" book for newer fans of Metallica or a good introductory for those that haven't read any other Metallica books. The first few chapters tell a bit about James' childhood and moving around SoCal but that would really be the extent of a biography as many chapters focus more around the band, individual members of the band, the death of Cliff, the hazing of Jason, the departure of Jason and James' rehab, the introduction of Robert and the band and James making amends with former friends and colleagues. Nothing new or groundbreaking in my opinion.
I chose this as I'm a huge heavy metal fan and I especially love the big four of thrash metal. This book isn't really worth it to huge metallic fans because 90% of what it contains has been covered in other interviews and articles over the years. There are a few nuggets of interesting info, but not much.If you want to know more about the thrash metal scene, I found Scot Ian and Dave Mustaine's books to be way better and entertaining. Just my opinion.
I'm a middle-aged, female teacher, and on a whim, I bought this and found myself intrigued by the man that is James Hetfield. I grew up on his music and love Metallica. It was fun to read about his journey so far and his success. I still love their music and I truly hope James will go out on his own someday and be just as successful with country music as he was with thrash and heavy metal. He seems to be doing his best as a spouse, father, friend and christian gentleman. He also has gracefully aged and handled all the things life throws at you quite well. You go James!!
I got this book as a gift for my hubby, who is a huge Metallica fan. He thoroughly enjoyed it; said it was well-written and had lots of info. He would definitely recommend for a fan.
If you have been a fan of Metallica over the years then it's likely that you already know much of what this book has to tell. As it wore on, I felt more and more like this was a book about Metallica rather than a book about James Hetfield. I think there is a difference. It skims over much of his life rather than digging deep into what makes him tick. The author tends to dwell on specific sources (such as a Playboy interview) and makes me wonder whether he did a lot of research. So, if you want to know what happened behind the scenes and the behind the man in a detailed and revealing way, look elsewhere. If you want a brief look at the history of Metallica, this is for you.
The author never interviewed James Hetfield. It's like he watched a bunch of youtube videos and then included some anecdotes from acquaintances of the band in it's early days. No insight, nothing new, boring.
It's ok if you haven't read any other books about the band. But if you have and like me, you were looking for more background on James as a person away from Metallica, you'll be disappointed. It starts off that way and then somewhere around halfway it becomes the typical Metallica band bio. In fact, I've seen more in-depth content about James from random interviews than you'll find in this books. But I guess it's worth the 8 bucks or whatever.
